Navajo and Hopi Water Rights

Dear Sedona Eye,

Arizona Senators Jon Kyl and John McCain are pushing legislation to give large corporations control over Navajo and Hopi water rights on the Little Colorado River forever.

The bill would give corporations like Peabody Coal and the Navajo Generating Station tens of thousands of acre-feet of Navajo and Hopi water annually and force the extension of Peabody and NGS leases without regard for public health impacts or Navajo and Hopi community input.

Senators Kyl and McCain say that if the tribes refuse, they stand to lose federal funds needed to provide drinking water to reservation communities. This is coercive and wrong.

That’s why I created a petition on SignOn.org to Sen. McCain and Sen. Kyl, which says:

Please drop S. 2109. The Navajo and Hopi people need the water from the Little Colorado River for their way of life and now Senators Kyl and McCain want them to give up their rights so they can give the water rights to large corporations! This is wrong! Please help the Navajo and Hopi people fight this!

Will you sign the petition? Click here to add your name, and then pass it along to your friends:
