Portable fire extinguishers are a critical first-stage tool for extinguishing fire in its earliest stages. District Fire Inspector Kevin Sullivan states, “Portable fire extinguishers are most effective when they are readily available and fully operational, and when people know how to use them properly. Most importantly, deciding to call 9-1-1 and have professional fire crews respond should be an early consideration when deciding to use a portable fire extinguisher.”

The adopted Fire Code requires portable fire extinguishers serving commercial occupancies to be inspected and serviced annually by a reputable fire extinguisher servicing company – including a tag which indicates such service.

Fire extinguishers should be mounted no lower than 4 inches off the floor and no higher than 5 feet and should be easily identifiable, accessible and free from obstructions. Residents and businesses with additional questions or with interest in knowing more about fire extinguisher use and training should visit the (NFPA) National Fire Protection Association website at www.nfpa.org or contact the Sedona Fire District Community Risk Management Division at (928) 282-6800.
