NAFB volunteers cutting firewood for distribution

Sedona AZ (July 18, 2013) – Northern Arizona Food Bank (NAFB) has been helping low income families, seniors, and disabled individuals with free firewood during the winter months. There are many families in Northern Arizona living without plumbing and electricity dependent on firewood for heating and cooking needs. NAFB works hard to fill this need!

Even though it is summer, NAFB’s staff is preparing for the fall season. New applications must be filled out and on file with our office each year. A half a cord of free fire wood may be available each month starting on October 1, 2013, if clients qualify based on Low Income status, Senior Citizen, Disability, and or Other documented significant need.

To fill out an application, stop by NAFB’s office at 3805 East Huntington Drive, Flagstaff, Arizona, on Monday through Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. beginning July 15. Please bring the following information with you; Photo ID, Proof of income, or documented significant need. If you have questions or need directions, call 928-526-2211 during business hours.

Northern Arizona Food Bank has distributed 1,314 cords of wood free of charge since the inception of this program in 2001. Individuals and organizations that contribute to this local effort are the Flagstaff Community Foundation and their collaborators, local Flagstaff arborists, USFS Coconino National Forest thinning program, Winslow Arizona Prison crew, and countless volunteer and staff hours.

  2. Summer is upon us, children are out of school, and the 4th of July festivities are over… As we reflect on the importance of the 4th of July, we are drawn back into the reality of the many people in our community that the Northern Arizona Food Bank (NAFB) serves.

These less fortunate didn’t have a holiday barbeque, couldn’t plan a summer road trip, and live day to day wondering if their finances will get them to the next payday (if this is even an option). With school out, families have to provide for their children who may otherwise have had part of their meals provided at school, creating hardship on families. This time of year is even harder on those in need and our Food Bank does our best to meet this need.

A recent study, “MEAL GAP” reported that Food Insecurity in Coconino County estimates 71% of our local population is “food insecure” and fall below the 185% supplemental nutrition assistance program threshold. This study is a reflection of the many vulnerable children, seniors, and struggling families NAFB sees on a daily basis, right here in the Flagstaff community.

Through the help of compassionate people who can give, NAFB is able to help the neediest people with food. HOWEVER, the need is never ending. This is why NAFB continuously makes this and many other pleas to You as FRIENDS OF OUR LOCAL NEIGHBORS IN NEED.

Please join NAFB in the Summer Food Challenge “PATRIOTISM IS HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS” by donating a percentage of what you and your family would spend on a road trip, a barbeque, a dinner on the town, a night at the movies, anything at all to help a needy neighbor right here in our Community. Help us put food on their tables to feed their families.

Thank you! For more information on how you can donate, please go to http://www.nafoodbank.org or call 928-526-2211.
