Harley McGuire, SedonaEye.com  Star Pet Columnist gives Four Paws Up to World Rabies Day on September 28

Florence AZ (September 17, 2013) – September 28 is World Rabies Day, a global health observance that seeks to raise awareness about rabies and enhance prevention and control efforts. Co-sponsored by the United States Center for Disease Control and the Alliance for Rabies Control (ARC) since 2007, World Rabies Day has been celebrated in countries throughout the world.

According to SedonaEye.com Star Four Paws Up Pet Columnist Harley McGuire, World Rabies Day is an excellent time to take steps that can help prevent and control rabies, such as vaccinating pets including dogs and cats and providing education on how to avoid the animals that typically transmit rabies:  raccoon, bats, skunks, and foxes.

On Saturday, September 28, Pinal County Animal Care and Control will be open from 8 AM to 5 PM. It will be a day packed with fun activities. For the first time ever, all licensing jurisdictions will be in one place to provide one-stop licensing and vaccination.

“A lot of people don’t realize that Animal Control’s primary mission is to prevent the spread of rabies, which is deadly to animals and humans,” Pinal County Animal Care and Control Director Kaye Dickson explained, adding, “Licensing your pet gives proof that it has a current vaccine. If there is no proof of vaccination and your dog bites someone and breaks the skin, we have to impound the animal at the owner’s expense until rabies is ruled out.”

world rabies dayIf you are a resident of unincorporated Pinal County, your cat does not need to be licensed. Some cities and towns do require licenses for cats. Casa Grande and Eloy will be issuing licenses at Animal Care and Control from 8 AM until Noon. Coolidge and Apache Junction will be there all day. Animal Care and Control can issue licenses for the remaining cities and towns in Pinal County.

Pinal County licenses are priced as follows:

  • Unaltered Dog One Year $30.00
  • Altered Dog One Year $15.00
  • Altered Dog One Year Senior Owner (62 years or older) $6.00
  • Altered Dog Three Year $35.00
  • Altered Dog Three year Senior Owner (62 years or older) $18.00
  • All licenses must be paid for with cash or check only.

In addition to the rabies vaccinations, a vet will be offering the following vaccinations:

  • Parvo/Distemper $21.00
  • Bordetella $10.00
  • Feline Four Way $10.00
  • FELV $25.00
  • FIP $15.00

The Pinal County animal control shelter will have special adoption pricing for select cats and dogs. Micro-chipping of pets will be available at the reduced rate of $15.00. Microchips can be administered to pet dogs, cats, ferrets and rabbits. For the safety of the vets and Animal Care and Control staff, feral/wild cats will not be vaccinated or micro-chipped.

The Pinal County Animal Care and Control Shelter and Adoption Center, 1150 South Eleven Mile Corner Road, Casa Grande, Arizona, will be open 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. (special hours for the September 28 National World Rabies Day event).

Other event activities include:

  • Tours and open house event all day
  • Introduction to Dog Bathing & Grooming presentation from 9 AM to 11 AM
  • Volunteer Orientation and Information session from Noon to 2 PM
  • Free Bathing Station – Wash your own pet at the shelter
  • Early Disposition Class from 3 PM to 5 PM – This class is generally offered to people who have received a citation and would rather attend a class than pay a fine. On World Rabies day it will be offered to anyone who would like to learn more about how the law affects animals and their owners. This is the perfect class for anyone considering a new pet. It offers basics on pet ownership and the rights and responsibilities of a pet owner.

There will be an all day silent auction! Volunteers will be offering items for auction with the proceeds being used to cover vet fees for animals that are sick or injured. If you have any item to donate for the auction, please bring it to the shelter by Friday, September 27, 2013, or call 520-866-7601 for possible pick up of larger items.
