Political Factoid: Did you know?

Arizona ranks 9th in the United States for the number of women it elects to public office, with 31% of women in office.

Until now, Democratic women candidates outnumbered their GOP counterparts. But, according to a National Public Radio (NPR) story released on June 3rd, Republican females are seizing the lead in the bid for Congressional House seats.
In 2008, only 18 of the 54 women who ran for Congressional House seats were Republicans.  But this year, more than half of the 107 female candidates are Republicans, as 61 GOP women vie for House seats.  Democrats Gabrielle Giffords and Ann Kirkpatrick are both running for re-election in Arizona, and both served in the state legislature.  There are women running for seven of the eight Arizona Congressional seats, and one for the U.S. Senate (both GOP and Democrats), which is something we rarely see anywhere in the country including Arizona, stated Dana Kennedy, Executive Director of Emerge Arizona.
