Dedication Ceremony for Schnebly Hill Roundabout Sculpture

Sedona The Open GateSedona AZ (November 10, 2015) – The City of Sedona invites the community to the dedication ceremony for the Schnebly Hill roundabout sculpture, The Open Gate, created by local artist Reagan Word. The event is Thursday, November 19, 2015, at 11:00 in the morning, across from the roundabout in the Hozho building parking lot. There is additional upper level parking on the south side of Hozho, and nearby at Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village on SR 179.

“It has been such an honor to be part of this project and it has given me a real sense of community. From the beginning, this project has had a life of its own. To watch it develop from what can be imagined to a reality is the essence of why I am an artist,” Word said. “I am grateful to the city of Sedona, friends, family, and so many talented craftsmen for their heartfelt contributions to the work as well as to the Arizona Department of Transportation for allowing us a privileged space on their spectacular highway into Sedona.”

City of Sedona Arts and Culture Coordinator Nancy Lattanzi stated, “It has been a pleasure working with Reagan on all stages of this project from conception to completion. I especially enjoyed visiting his studio to see the heron as a work in progress. The detail and care that Reagan took to patiently carve and create a lifelike blue heron, as well as the meticulous metal work that went into creating the bronze gate, is truly a symbolic gift to our city.”

  1. Nice art work but another distraction from Sedona’s real attraction: RED ROCK FORMATIONS.

  2. Dear Bill & Mary, Minnesota

How wonderful that at one time you came to Sedona to visit and contribute to our sales tax. With your help, in some small way by paying your sales tax, you helped to contribute to the funding of that artwork.

I’m guessing that there must not be all that much to do in Minnesota after all why else would you be bothering to write a posting on this most joyful web site that deals with Sedona. I’m also guessing that when you first came to Sedona, you must not have been enthralled by our city’s beauty and with nothing to do, sought out a web site like SedonaEye.

  3. Dear Just Sayin’ –

Like it or not, we are from Minnesota and thank you so much for your warm acknowledgment to two of us that were under the impression tourists were welcome in Sedona. Wrong again!

In case you weren’t aware, word of mouth is the best form of advertising, and now with the convenience of the internet and e-mails, that “word” is vastly and effectively spread posthaste.

Your message, Just Sayin’, is very powerful and definitely not beneficial to Sedona in a positive manner.

    Be happy.

    Bill & Mary

  4. As annual Phoenix Snowbirds from the east coast be assured we will NEVER patronize Sedona again thanks to the attitude of Just Sayin’. We will visit Flagstaff and other northern Arizona areas where the money we spend is appreciated.

  5. @bill and mary
    @paul and beverly

Please we know your some disgruntled local.

Anytime someone feels a need to tell us were they are from or one person writing feels a need to include thier mate in the heading…….sounds like BS

    go away

  6. Just Sayin' says:

@ Bill & Mary, Minnesota & Paul & Beverly, East Coast Residents

Don’t let the door hit ya in the butt on the way out.

I couldn’t agree with Fake Response.

    Just Sayin’

  7. Marty says:

@Fake Response, nice try at blowing off one of Sedona’s most dreaded nightmares, that there might be, just might be some disgruntled tourists that wouldn’t give Sedona a 4-star rating as the regional chamber of commerce claims they’ve been working towards promoting.

Sounds more to me like you are one of those “on the take” and your misguided assessment of two couples claiming to be previous tourists is risky business.

No, I do not know whether or not either are legitimate, but is it really worth taking a chance to insult even more tourists in the event they are legitimate?
Face it – this Sedona Eye web site has had over one millions hits so again don’t be so quick to past judgment – especially since you, yourself, are obviously “fake” just based on the name you use to respond.

In fact you sound very much like quite possibly the most disgruntled local in Sedona who frequently posts under a variation of “west sedona resident.” One and the same or definitely related?

You would be laughable if not so absurdly pathetic. Get a grip and enjoy the money you continue to rip off from legitimate tax paying businesses. You are the fraud and you know it!

  8. Tam says:

    I love this sculpture!

  9. @marty

What’s the matter Marty…..you didn’t take your happy pill today

    Tsk..Tsk. So mean and hateful..

Not “fake Response” but could not agree more..
You know you can always go shopping for you hate pills in Cottonwood, this way no city sale tax for you
    Enjoy your day

  10. Mary S. says:

@Tam. Is anyone here criticizing the art work itself? As I read the first comment made by tourists, they simply suggested that artists competing with the red rocks are sort of on a self-imposed “mission impossible.” (my words not their’s)

Such lovely art sculptures might be better viewed (and appreciated) in more appropriate areas where attention to navigate that roundabout without engaging in a multi-vehicle auto accident doesn’t occupy one’s undivided attention. How fair is that to the artist?

  11. HA. HA, HA says:

Way to go Marty. Didn’t take much to smoke West Sedona Resident (all CAPS)aka JW out from under her rock. She’s so predictable it’s boring.

And BTW @MaryS don’t feel too badly for the lucky artists that win the luck of the draw when our great city decides on which pieces to purchase for their place of honor. Contributing artists receive top dollar for their efforts whether people actually have the opportunity to see their work while, as you say, concentrating on playing Sedona’s world famous version of “Dodge ‘Em.” Heh, heh, heh. Lordy, Lordy -who would have thought.

Sedona Schnebly, where are you when we need you most?

  12. Gas Guzzler says:

This is good! People will now have something to look at, when they are sitting in roundabout gridlock!!!

  13. Just Sayin' says:

    @ Gas Guzzler

I agree, why do we need such beautiful art work at that roundabout? I think that we should pull out all of those un-needed beautiful plants and red clay sidewalks. How about we get rid of the nice red rock medians between the road. I think that our roads should look more like Rt 17. I mean really, we have all of those red mountains to look at why should we invest in any beauty for our roads.

  14. Norma says:

All the artwork in the round about won’t bring visitors to Sedona. It won’t make the residents feel welcome. It is about how Sedona makes the people feel. The city management needs to like and respect the residents and businesses in the city limits and treat them fairly. Instead they insult them by the constant rationalization of gifting the regional chamber and regional lodging millions. Because they suppress and bully the residents and businesses everyone is afraid to speak up. By not speaking up they think you agree with them.

Can’t make Sedona pretty on the inside bring people in to live and spend money as the negative treatment shines through. Just watch a city council meeting. It all BS with special interests controlling the olde CC. All BTW have no idea how to run a city, Ego IMO. They have taken away your rights.

  15. Jess Lookin says:

Sedona was just as beautiful with dirt roads. It just had less tourist capacity.

Without a red sidewalk you might have to be aware so you would not trip on a real rock.

Without red tinted sidewalks you would not need a city to maintain them.

OMG NATURE !!!!!! We must pave and change it. Nature could not possibly survive with out a City in control and well paid city employees.

  16. Wes says:

    @Just Sayin’

I mean really why should you have the twinkles in your hair and you dispatch all of us with out them? Do those twinkles infiltrate your brain? PLEASE!!!

Oh, and while you were not trying to make a bigger point (?) – you made it when you said ” I mean really, we have all of those red mountains to look at why should we invest in any beauty for our roads.”

    good night Jessica

  17. I and my family like that art piece and those others, thanks for letting us enjoy Sedona and congratulations to the talented artist and his team.
