Dear Editor: Keep Oak Creek Beautiful

Keep Oak Creek Beautiful litter pickup dates have been set for 2011 on May 21st, July 30th and September 24th.  If you’d like to help us keep Mile 380 of Highway 89A in Oak Creek Canyon, and areas around Oak Creek, trash-free, please drop me an email or call us at (928) 554-5460.   We’ll send you the details for the first event in early May.  Managing Directors are Judy Lewis and Jim Sandoval.

We are also in the process of developing a Creek cleanup event as part of our Oak Creek Community Outreach Program (OCCOP) and hope to have it operational in 2012.

There were several groups on Scenic Highway 89A and Highway 260 who recovered litter this weekend. These bags will be picked up and taken to recycling no later than a week from today (5/2/11) as again we wish to educate the public that most of our ADOT Adopt-A-Highway Permittees in our area are restoring the beauty to America the Beautiful to honor our military, veterans and communities plus make the community aware of the amount, type and contributors to our litter issues through this period of time.

Though we have yet to confirm the exact number of bags of litter collected this weekend, we know that there were over 65 bags on 5 miles of highway and 54 of them were on Scenic Highway 89A. Where is our pride? Are those litter warning signs worth anything or serving any purpose? It would be my hope that all cities publish the number of litter and load cover citations quarterly to show that enforcement is having an effect.

Reeses & Sons, Tire Pro Automotive, Rusty’s Morningstar Ranch, most of our 15 Scenic Highway 89A ADOT Adopt-A-Highway Permittees and some of our Highway 260 Permittees continue to be our go-to citizens in restoring the beauty to America.

We have appreciated the fact that the mattress on Scenic Highway 89A between Upper and Lower Red Rock Loop has remained in place for a few days to show proof positive that there is a lack of education regarding covered loads and littering laws and this mattress and the amount of highway litter supports this statement.

I have instructed the Folksville “Special Forces Unit” to properly dispose of this mattress before the end of the week as we continue to save our ADOT Highway Maintenance Department and the tax payers time and money.

We support all groups anti-litter efforts as “We the people” work together and get’r done.

  3. Fecal Matter and Trash in Verde washes says:

February 2011, local residents noticed the homeless who are already and again moving into Cottonwood’s washes. These homeless are taking up residence behind a local restaurant in the area. In 2009, the trash in one of the Cottonwood washes magically disappeared after a monstrous rain storm. I wonder where all of that trash and human feces went?

Hey, anyone up for a safe swim in the Verde River?
