Dear Editor: Breastfeeding Event Rescheduled

World Breastfeeding Week Celebration Rescheduled The Coconino County Health Department (CCHD) and several local organizations have rescheduled the World Breastfeeding Week Celebration.

The original event, which was scheduled in August in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), was cancelled due to inclement weather. The rescheduled event will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Heritage Square in Flagstaff.

Saturday, October 2 is the day of the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge where mothers and children at sites across Canada, the United States, and other countries will compete to set the record for the most children breastfeeding at one time. All are invited to the World Breastfeeding Week Celebration, which will include prizes, giveaways, crafts, music and more. Those attending can also decorate a fabric square for the breastfeeding quilt.

The event is sponsored by the Coconino County Health Department, Northern Arizona Healthcare Flagstaff Medical Center Women’s and Infant Center, and La Leche League of Northern Arizona and hosted by the Arizona Breastfeeding Coalition (ABC), Northern Region Chapter.

ABC is a non-profit organization comprised of lactation advocates, lactation professionals, physicians, nurses, dietitians, and business and health care organizations from across Arizona. For additional information, please contact the Coconino County Health Department at 928-679-7272.

Thank you.

We rescheduled our “rained out” event to this Saturday, October 2nd, Heritage Square , from 10AM-2PM. We chose this date because it coincides with the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge. This is a specific time across Canada , the US , and around the world, when moms will “latch on” their infants and children. It will happen in Heritage Square at 11AM. This “latch on” event is held to increase public awareness of the importance of breastfeeding. I am attaching our flier and providing a link to the Quintessence website, should you wish to research it more. We would really love to have some exposure in announcing and covering our Celebration and Challenge.

“In 2001 the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge started in the Canadian province of British Columbia with 856 babies and their mothers at 26 sites. By 2009, there were 4,766 babies at 246 sites in 21 countries. The Breastfeeding Challenge continues to grow globally as additional people join in. Breastfeeding and donor milk-banking need support around the world. This year we would like to see the number of participants increase dramatically. Do your part, join us – organize a site – big or small! Every breastfeeding child counts in the final numbers!” http://www.babyfriendly.ca/challenge-home.aspx

If you care about your children’s health, then this will be of interest:

Your vitamins and supplements are under attack in Washington, but some new bills aim to restore and protect your freedoms.

We need your help to send a message to legislators on these important proposed laws:
