City Updates Commission Volunteers Needed

Sedona AZ (June 30, 2010) – Volunteers are needed for the Community Plan Update Citizens Steering Committee and the Historic Preservation Commission.

1) The City of Sedona is seeking volunteers to serve on a citizen’s steering committee for the update of the Sedona Community Plan. The committee will consist of nine to eleven members including the Planning and Zoning Commission chairman, one City Council member and seven to nine Sedona residents.

The committee will review the Community Plan’s Public Participation Procedures and initiate and guide the public process to determine community goals and priorities.  The planning process is expected to include different community plan ideas that need to be effectively communicated to the public so that one overall community vision will eventually result. This vision, in the form of a draft Community Plan, will be considered by the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.  Citizens of Sedona will then vote on the Plan.

Citizens interested in serving on this committee must be Sedona residents, must serve as individuals and not as official representatives of an association, club or organization, and must be willing to commit to public meetings at least twice a month for up to two years.  Committee members should have an open mind, bring no personal bias, be solution-oriented and be willing to serve in an open process to achieve consensus.  It is important that this committee represent a diverse cross-section of the community.  It is also important for the committee to include at least some individuals with backgrounds and experience in at least one of the following areas:

·   Planning and Design, with the ability to visually present and effectively communicate planning concepts to the public.

·   Good communication, mediation and facilitator skills.

·   Environmental and sustainability knowledge.

·   Computer graphics and electronic media and communications.

In addition, committee members must commit to becoming familiar with the current Sedona Community Plan.

The committee will be appointed by the City Council in September and will begin working in September or October 2010.

Applications may be picked up at the City Clerk’s Office, 102 Roadrunner Drive, Sedona City Hall, beginning July 2, 2010. Applications must be returned to the Clerk’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on August 4, 2010. The Community Plan is available at City Hall Community Development Department; the Sedona Public Library, and, on the city website at www.SedonaAZ.gov/planUpdate.

2) The Historic Preservation Commission:

The City of Sedona is currently seeking one volunteer to fill a vacancy and unexpired term on the Historic Preservation Commission. If you are interested in local history, have some free time, and want to get involved in education, outreach, and helping to preserve our Sedona past, this is the opportunity for you.

The commission meets just once a month on the second Monday at 4:00 p.m. The commission works to preserve significant buildings and sites, host special recognition events, and educates the community. Interested individuals do not need to have any specialized background or experience to join this dynamic commission.
