Sedona AZ (August 15, 2014) – The City of Sedona Arts and Culture Coordinator is seeking seasoned artists for school year 2014/2015.

Creative individuals who work well with children are encouraged to apply. The Artist in the Classroom Program fosters rewarding, creative learning experiences in our local schools for all aged children from pre-K through high school.

If you specialize in either fine or visual arts, art history, architecture, performing arts, music, literary or culinary arts, contact the Arts and Culture Division for an application. Of specific interest are those talented in drawing, painting, weaving, printmaking, mixed media, theater, writing, journaling and storytelling.

Once enrolled in the program, classroom artists collaborate with a designated teacher and plan integrated art projects that enhance curriculum. Classroom experiences can range from a one-time workshop to classes presented on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

These interdisciplinary art classes are designed specifically for each individual classroom with the purpose of encouraging creative thinking, problem solving skills and art exploration. Artists are paid $25 per hour and reimbursed for materials, upon preliminary approval of their planning guide by the Arts and Culture Coordinator.

The application form is available at www.SedonaAZ.gov or by contacting Arts and Culture Coordinator Nancy Lattanzi at 928-203-5078 or NLattanzi@SedonaAZ.gov.

Submit a completed application no later than Friday, September 5, 2014, to the Arts and Culture Division, 102 Roadrunner Drive, Sedona, Arizona 86336. Potential applicants will be contacted for an interview. All selected candidates for the program must first pass a thorough background check prior to working with students.

What a great idea! It makes total sense for the City to spend money on “artists” for the school district while at the same time stating in the City budget, “In order to continue to address capital infrastructure improvements and pursue new capital outlay projects beyond 2017 [FY 2016-17], other funding sources and/or a debt financing strategy must be pursued.” After all, Sedona is “animated by the arts” not by infrastructure.

  3. The Sedona Artist In The Classroom program involves approximately 25 artists (visual, performing and literary) in the community, and is funded by the City of Sedona.

Thank you Sedonaeye for the history lesson with the old stories that pop up again. The paste above was when Nancy Dunst ran the program in 09-10 – and then it paid $25 an hour. How much was spent then?

How many artists will be hired and how many hours are budgeted @25 an hour for this school year?

Nancy Latanzi please reply. Don’t get me wrong I love the arts in schools but want to know how much it costs us in the budget. That’s fair since it’s our collective money. Sharon in Sedona

Here we go again. More proof that this city of Sedona cannot tend to its own affairs. They don’t get it that the school and fire are “districts” which are financially supported with legitimate property taxes. If a NO to Home Rule will stop all of this inappropriate spending then it must be done. Wonderful as it is to have art in the classroom It is NOT the responsibility of Sedona taxpayers to provide for it. We already pay for the school district with our property taxes. The idea of disincorporation is sounding better all the time.
