Arizona Department of Education Superintendent of Public Instruction, John Huppenthal

Sedona AZ (May 30, 2014) – The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) has announced three Associate Superintendents will assume positions with the ADE. Dr. Cecilia Johnson was named Associate Superintendent of Highly Effective Teachers and Leaders, replacing Interim Associate Superintendent Warren Jacobson. Robert Gold will assume the position of Associate Superintendent for Highly Effective Schools, replacing Associate Superintendent Marv Lamer. Carol Lippert will assume the position of Associate Superintendent for High Academic Standards, replacing Associate Superintendent Kathy Hrabluk.

Dr. Johnson will have oversight of the following areas: Educator Excellence, Certification, Effective Teachers and Leaders, Professional Development, Arizona Charter School Program, And Education and Career Action Plans. Dr. Johnson has been a district director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, the Superintendent for the Coolidge Unified School District #21 and an interim elementary Principal at the Higley Traditional Academy. She has served on multiple accreditation teams with the NCA/AdvancED. She has worked as a consultant with two Arizona school districts on their teacher and principal evaluation systems. Her first day at the ADE is June 16, 2014.

Mr. Gold will have oversight over the Exceptional Student Services and the 21st Century Community Learning Center, School Improvement and Intervention, Career and Technical Education, Title I, School Safety, Homeless, Refugee, and Special African American Outreach, Migrant and Special Latino Outreach, and Native American Indian Education and Outreach. Mr. Gold is currently serving as a successful superintendent of a district in Peoria, Illinois, where he previously was the assistant superintendent and the principal. He brings a wealth of experience that will allow our work with all LEAs, large and small, rural and urban, to effectively move forward. Mr. Gold and his family are excited about their move to Arizona! His first day at the ADE is July 1, 2014.

Ms. Lippert will have oversight over Early Childhood, K-12 Academic Standards, the Office of English Language Acquisition Services, and Race to the Top. Ms. Lippert has been recognized nationally as an outstanding school administrator. She represents Arizona on a national NAEP advisory committee and has served as a long-time successful principal of an A+ school. Ms. Lippert brings a strong background in curriculum design and implementation, professional learning, continuous improvement design and performance management to her new position. Her first day at the ADE is June 16, 2014.
