  2. The National Beef Packing company this week recalled almost 23,000 pounds of ground beef over fears it could be contaminated with E. coli. The Missouri company issued the recall after the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service tested a ground beef sample positive for the bacteria. As of Wednesday, there have been no reported illnesses related to the beef.

The recall is regional, affecting 22,737 pounds of ground beef produced on May 25 2013. The products are all 10-pound packs of National Beef-branded beef and chuck. Packages of 80/20 Coarse Ground Chuck, 81/19 Coarse Ground Beef, 80/20 Fine Ground Chuck with sell by dates of June 14, 2013 are all included in the recall. E. coli can cause severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, dehydration, and, in rare cases, death. The USDA recommends using a food thermometer to ensure that ground beef is cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. PETALUMA, Calif. – A northern California company is recalling more than 8.7 million pounds (3.95 million kilograms) of beef products because it processed diseased and unhealthy animals without a full federal inspection, U.S. officials said Saturday.

Beef recall: National Beef product could contain E.coli

A year’s worth of meat products processed by Rancho Feeding Corp., which has been under scrutiny by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service was recalled today. The agency said that without full inspection, the recalled products are unfit for human consumption.

The products were processed from Jan. 1, 2013, through Jan. 7, 2014, and shipped to distribution centers and retail stores in California, Florida, Illinois and Texas. They include beef carcasses, oxtail, liver, cheeks, tripe, tongue and veal bones.

Last month the company recalled more than 40,000 pounds (18,140 kilograms) of meat products produced on Jan. 8 that also didn’t undergo a full inspection.

The problems were discovered as part of an ongoing investigation, the FSIS said.

A call to the company went unanswered. There have been no reports of illnesses.

  4. The massive rice recall may leave grocery shelves bare of Uncle Ben’s rice products for quite some time.

Government officials are currently investigating a number of illnesses that have been directly associated with the brand’s infused rice products.

Mars, Inc. has voluntarily recalled the infused flavored rice products “out of an abundance of caution” after being notified of illnesses that occurred at three different schools in the Houston, TX area. The incident resulted in the company removing all infused rice products from its supply chain.

“Our network of distributors, brokers, and sales associates immediately started notifying their customers and collecting the product,” Mars Foodservices said.

Once the massive food processing company noticed sales were completed through websites and wholesalers, the executive decision to announce a massive recall was enforced.
