Andrei Cherny – Candidate for Arizona State Treasurer – Democrat

“I got into this race because of what is happening to the Arizona economy,” Democratic candidate for State Treasurer Andrei Cherny said.   “We have the worst economic downturn in our history, the worst deficit in our history and the people in government haven’t done anything to turn things around. The Treasurer is supposed to be in there fighting for taxpayers and do everything that we can to create
good jobs and go after some of the waste in government.”

‘The State Treasurer does a few different things, one of the responsibilities of the Treasurer is to audit the state government and its finances, and that hasn’t been happening for a long time. We see all of these examples of waste and mismanagement and it is the job of the Arizona State Treasurer to look and see where those taxpayer dollars are going. I am the only candidate in this race who says that he will audit state government.”

Cherny pointed out that there is ostensibly assigned staff in the government offices that is supposed to work on the state audits. Yet no one has audited the legislature or the governor’s office in over a decade. He added, “I can’t wait to see what crawls out under those rocks when we lift them up.”

The Arizona State Treasurer is responsible for investing billions of dollars and according to Cherny that money comes from Arizona’s Education Endowment and State Land Trusts.  “Unlike in every other state, Arizona is placing that money at a high risk on Wall Street,” he said while claiming that the state has lost billions of dollars over the past four years.

Cherny wants to follow the lead of states like Utah and Texas which make safer investments and yet get a better rate of return than the Arizona funds. He also wants to work with companies that will invest in Arizona and create jobs here especially in the high tech, wind and solar industries.

“The other part of the Arizona Treasurer’s job is to be the chief economic officer of our state,” said Cherny, “the same way that the Arizona Attorney General is chief of law enforcement. So whether it is bringing people together or knocking heads together I am going to work to make sure that we start having economic policies in Arizona that will work and will help bring us back off the mat.

“One big thing we need is an immediate economic recovery plan. It needs to happen in the legislature with things like tax credits to hire new people. A lot of people have talked about that kind of thing but the partisan trench warfare that we have has stopped any action. I am going to focus on making sure that things actually get done and we start solving some of these problems.”

Andrei Cherny believes the state has made a series of ‘bone-headed’ moves like selling off the State Capitol, closing the State Parks and firing the tax collectors, decisions that have already cost Arizona more money than it has saved. Moves like these, said Cherny, are just driving the state “deeper and deeper into debt.”

“The State Treasurer is supposed to be an honest broker, not just to sound the alarm. You also need to get in there and offer some ideas and solutions and work with people in the legislature and with the governor to actually get things done,” candidate Cherny said. “For instance, what the State Treasurer does is work with a lot of the big banks in terms of managing Arizona deposits. What we need to do is be able to sit down with some of these banks and say, ‘We put billions in your banks. You need to do a better job of lending to small businesses in our state and work with people who are doing their best to pay their bills so they can stay in their homes and keep their businesses afloat.’

‘I’m going to go after the waste with the audits and by making the right kind of investments, things that will help us and not just help these bailed out banks.”

Have you heard that Rep. Jim Kolbe, a Republican, is volunteering to work for Democrat Andrei Cherney for Arizona State Treasurer?

Having read “The Candy Bombers” and “The Next Deal” by Andrei Cherney, I can understand why a Republican such as Jim Kolbe would want to endorse and work for Andrei’s campaign. Not only is Andrei Cherney a great and widely-recognized writer, he is also a brilliant leader and powerful speaker. Rep. Kolbe’s spirited support for Andrei Cherney is not surprising given the fact that the ideas put forth in Andrei’s books have received acclaim from such disparate individuals as Newt Gingrich and Jonathan Alter. About “The Next Deal,” Newt Gingrich wrote that Andrei Cherney “has written one of the most thoughtful books about public policy in the information age to be produced by anyone of any ideological background or from any partisan belief.”

Republican Jim Kolbe, who served in the Arizona state legislature and as an Arizona Congressman for a total of 28 years, has agreed to become the chairman of Andrei Cherney’s campaign. It’s good to see Rep. Kolbe and other Republicans and Independents coming out strongly for Andrei Cherney’s candidacy. We in Arizona are given a badly-needed gift when a young man of Andrei Cherney’s caliber is willing to serve in this time of great political turmoil.

All Americans need to be more like Rep. Kolbe and rise above the muck that has become our politics and try to mark their ballots for the most qualified, not the most partisan, candidates. My vote goes to Andrei Cherney for Arizona State Treasurer and my kudo goes to Rep. Kolbe for putting country and state ahead of party.
