Camp Verde AZ (May 13, 2013) – What do you see as you travel down Finnie Flats Road into Camp Verde and throughout Arizona? Do you see all the litter alongside the roads?

On Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 9:00 in the morning, you will see a different picture when the 6th and 7th graders from American Heritage Academy, Camp Verde campus, will be making a difference in our community. These students will be taking on a new service project by gathering and recycling litter along Finnie Flats Road four times per year.

Several weeks ago, Gary Chamberlain of Folksville USA, made a trip to our campus. He challenged our students to make a difference in our community by cleaning along Finnie Flats Road. This opportunity for our students will show local businesses and residents that we care about our community and the economy of our community.

Our students are working toward keeping the phrase “America the Beautiful” a true statement.

The bags of trash collected on Finne Flats Road will be left in place for four days as part of a community awareness and education message. After these four days of displaying the bags of trash, the Town of Camp Verde Public Works Department will be bringing the blue bags back to our campus where our students will sort and recycle all of the contents.

The usable blue bags will be stored and reused for our next litter event.

Following the event, the students will be writing a 500 word essay asking them to answer the following questions – those that participate in the litter event and essay will be eligible to enter a raffle drawing to win $50 offered by Folksville USA:

  • What did you learn?
  • What are the solutions for reversing the occurrence of highway litter?
  • Why does highway litter effect the economy of our community?
  • What are you going to do to make a difference?

American Heritage Academy’s motto for their students is “To help build tomorrow’s leaders and role models today.”

what a good thing to do

  2. Please help! The quarterly “Leap Frog” Highway litter event is scheduled for May 18, 2013. Many Arizona Adopt-A-Highway groups will be on our highways on this date and throughout 2013 as we collectively restore the beauty to “America & Arizona the Beautiful” and her highways.

Mark your calendar for “Leap Frog” litter events! They are scheduled on the third Saturday of February, May, August and November throughout 2013. As residents of your community, will you participate in some manner and be part of solving the highway litter issues in Arizona and the United States?

Any Adopt-A-Highway group that needs a helping hand or residents offering their helping hands should contact us at (928) 202-1186 or email FolksvilleUSA@gmail.com so we can connect the Adopt-A-Highway groups with you that want to help.

If you cannot join with others today, you can still do your part. Go on a walk and bag the trash along the way! Dispose of it in your own garbage container or better yet RECYCLE its contents! Remind others that litter hurts our wildlife, our fragile desert ecosystem, contaminates our water and ruins our tourist industry…there is nothing scenic about plastic bags hanging from mesquite trees! Encourage everyone to not litter and consider organizing your own Litter Lifter Event in your community (one to infinity and beyond) or join the Folksville USA movement. Everyone is part of the local litter solution!

It’s good to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same outdated rehashed material. Great read!
