Car with four teenage passengers flips and rolls after launching off roadway across ravine

Sedona AZ (June 1, 2015) – On May 28, 2015, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to an overturned vehicle on Beaverhead Flat Road, near the Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, Arizona. The car, a 2011 silver Hyundai sedan, was being driven east on Beaverhead Flat Road by a 16-year-old male. The Hyundai held three passengers, in addition to its driver; a 16-year-old girl in the front passenger seat, and two males in the back seat ages 16 and 17. The four teens were being followed by another vehicle with several friends.

While the vehicle was moving east along Beaverhead Flat Road, the girl in the front passenger seat made a decision to stand up, so that her upper body was visible through the sunroof of the Hyundai. The driver asked her to sit down because of safety concerns and, as she complied, she slipped and fell into the driver which caused him to swerve and leave the roadway. The vehicle went up an embankment, launched across a ravine, and landed upside down after the front seat passenger had been ejected.

The front seat passenger received serious injuries, and suffered numerous abrasions and cuts. She and a rear seat passenger, also injured, were back boarded by EMS personnel so they could be safely moved to the roadway and an ambulance.

Both teens were transported to the Verde Valley Medical Center. The driver suffered a possible concussion and complained of dizziness. He was airlifted to the Flagstaff Medical Center as was the other injured back seat passenger.

None of the injuries involving the teenagers appear to be life threatening.

No charges have been filed at this time. The investigation is continuing.

  1. That girl needs to be grounded for a year, sent to counseling. She almost got killed, she almost got her friends killed. Psychological counseling is required here for all. How about mandatory safe driving courses for each and every child in those two cars, because like attracts like. Make them go before their peers at schools and tell how damn lucky they are to have survived. Parents you have your kids because the universe gave you a gift.

Kids you are lucky that you are alive to be good and productive human beings instead of a road sign with silk flowers marked with your initials. Learn something here. Do something good with the rest of your lives.
