ADOT begins construction on I-17 climbing lane this week

PRESCOTT AZ (January 14, 2013) – Construction to add the first-ever climbing lane to ease traffic flow along a stretch of Interstate 17 south of Camp Verde is set to start this week, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The $11.8 million project will add a third traffic lane in two different areas along southbound I-17 to help move traffic climbing along Copper Canyon Hill near Camp Verde (mileposts 280-287).

One additional lane will be built between the State Route 260 and General Crook Trail traffic interchanges to allow larger vehicles to gain speed before merging while also providing more room for passenger vehicles traveling past slower traffic. Crews also will build a two-mile long climbing lane to improve traffic flow to the top of Copper Canyon.

For the next thirty days, drivers can expect shoulder closures in both directions between AZ SR 260 and General Crook Trail. In addition to the shoulder closures, the truck pull-out at the top of Copper Canyon will be closed for the next six months.

Work hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures with minimal delays. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
