Abraham Heschel – Mystic and Social Activist

Rabbi Alicia Magal, Sedona Arizona

Sedona AZ–Abraham Jacob Heschel was a renowned 20th century scholar of Jewish thought, a mystic, a poet, and a social activist.  His writing beautifully celebrates the mood, the experience, the spiritual depths of Judaism’s traditional practices.

Heschel was an inspiration,a collaborator, and a friend to many of the leading spiritual leaders of his time.  He taught the Kabbalah and made it relevant and accessible  to people seeking to fulfill their potential in the modern world.

Heschel also was a renowned interfaith social activist who marched often side-by-side with Rev. Martin Luther King, Rev. William Sloane Coffin, and others into the most dangerous situations of the early civil rights and anti-war campaigns.

Heschel’s theology advocated experiencing God’s creation with a radical amazement and joy that lies beyond knowledge, reason, and words.  He believed that by observing the Sabbath, and other Jewish traditions, we create a connection with the Divine that God wants and needs as much as we do.

Rabbi Alicia Magal, Paul Friedman, and Prof. David Ruderman of the University of Pennsylvania (on tape) will explain and discuss Abraham Heschel’s ideas and their implications for enriching one’s everyday life at the Jewish Community Center of Sedona and the Verde Valley, 100 Meadowlark Drive, Sedona, on Wednesday, April 27 at 10:00.  Everyone is welcome.
