I will not use my name because it is of no use to anyone except me, and since this is an opinion, I do not want repercussions for the family members and friends who are local teachers and staff. It’s my thought and my opinion so formulate your own with the information you choose. What I encourage is thought, and not becoming the sheep of a few well-trained sheepherders.
I do not support the Wisconsin teachers who are to be in classrooms, and are not. I do not support the doctors who give prescription excuses for “sick” leave, and I do not support corralling young children to march lockstep with teachers rather than be in classrooms studying.
This is not a history lesson, or a civics class tutorial, this is a protest in favor of benefits.
I doubt these “teachers” would march lockstep with the students whose parents do not have health care benefits. It is an inappropriate and ill-defined action to expect others join in their benefits “cause”…there is no “cause” here, there is a group of disgruntled workers with supreme benefit packages being asked to contribute a portion toward those benefits! This contribution is requested so that the rest of us, some without any benefits and some with woefully lacking in enough health care coverage, can have a token of the perks that the Wisconsin teachers union and the other parties to this action enjoy.
I, as a social progressive, mind heartily the empty-headedness of those jumping on this bandwagon of malcontents. MoveOn.org sent me a notice that a march will be held in Phoenix. This is ridiculous for a group such as MoveOn to approve and support this action. It is counter to the stated principles of the organization and I’m discontinuing my association as this is the third in a series of questionable “sheepherder” mentality by this organization that I once thought myself aligned with. There is no reasoning and no thought. There is a “jump on the poor workers bandwagon” except this is not about poor workers and the bandwagon is a golden chariot. Reason? Thought?
Teachers, go back to the classroom. Students, go back to the classroom. Union negotiators, do your job as paid. Man’s mind enables him to think and to reason. I suggest before one joins in this press-created event, that thought and reason be engaged. This isn’t Egypt! This isn’t about anything but keeping the “bennies” for a privileged few.
Turn off the tube interviews of marchers and stop the presses. This isn’t news. It’s not about social injustice. It’s not about liberty. It’s not about rights.
It’s about greed. Social liberals engage your brains. This isn’t a political issue, it’s a social issue.
There should be no tolerance for greed and those marching in Wisconsin are greedy, and the doctors who violate their Hippocratic oaths by writing “permission slips” should be held accountable for their actions…they are doing harm by permitting misuse of public trust and dollars for a “privileged” few. I bet you to the last dollar those doctors billed the system for “office visits” to write those permission slips! Disgusting. I’d rather that they gave a poor child a health care visit on that dime! Teachers, if you march, do it on your dime and time and not that of the poor kid in your classroom whose parents can’t afford daycare while you skip class, or the lost day of school in preparing for SAT tests.

Among those who already have received nonrenewal notices is the wife of Senate Republican Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, a key Walker ally. Lisa Fitzgerald is a counselor in the Hustiford school district, where all 34 teachers have gotten the warnings.
“The layoffs are real,” Scott Fitzgerald said Friday. “I don’t know if the Democrats understand that. This isn’t some game of chicken.”
Wisconsin must fill the state’s $137 million deficit and lay the groundwork for fixing a projected $3.6 billion shortfall in the upcoming 2011-13 budget.
…to top off the ugliness, there has been a mini-Twitter rampage of kindly folks calling for Walker’s death. They’ve forgotten about Gabby Giffords pretty fast.
Cut through all the special-interest spin and you’ve got a real debate about the role that public-sector unions have in the budget deficits that are bankrupting cities and states.
Public-sector unions reflexively call any proposed reduction in money or power “anti-union.” They could also be fairly described as “pro-taxpayer.”
Like many governors across the country, Scott Walker came into office facing a multibillion-dollar budget gap—$3.4 billion over two years. As part of the needed dose of fiscal discipline, he followed through on a campaign promise to get government workers to put some money toward their pensions and increase contributions for their health-care package. Democrats reluctantly agreed. But then Walker insisted on something more—a curtailing of collective bargaining. The unions acted like war had been declared and Democratic legislators escaped the state seeking to delay the vote.
“Walker is trying to do more than just balance this year’s budget with his proposals. He’s trying to give himself tools to more easily manage the budget throughout his entire tenure,” said Steven Malanga, author of the new book Shakedown: The Continuing Conspiracy Against the American Taxpayer.
“He wants the same flexibility the president of the United States has on managing compensation going forward. Federal workers have fewer collective-bargaining rights than what Walker is proposing in Wisconsin,” said Malanga, who noted that the president’s proposed five-year pay freeze on federal workers would be essentially impossible to enact with collective bargaining. “It’s very difficult to manage a governmental budget or any kind of a budget when you have the kind of restrictions that have been imposed by some of these union contracts.”
Let’s fill out the picture with some facts. Nearly 40 percent of government workers are unionized, compared with 7 percent in the private-sector work force. The average state and local government employee now makes 46 percent more in combined salary and benefits than his private sector counterpart does, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Four of five public-sector workers have lifetime pensions. State and local governments owe more than $1.5 trillion in unfunded health-care and non-pension benefits, according to one estimate by Credit Suisse. This isn’t going to end pretty.
The city of Vallejo, California, went bankrupt in 2008 because it was spending 74 percent of its $80 million budget on public-sector salaries and benefits. After five years, all workers were entitled to lifetime health benefits.
New York City’s average public-sector salaries and benefits have increased 63 percent since 2000. The Big Apple now spends more on firefighter pensions than it does for active-duty firefighter salaries.
And if you’re looking for a side-by-side comparison of the costs of collective bargaining, look no further than the D.C. suburbs of Fairfax County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland—captured in this analysis by the Washington Post: “Virginia law denies public employees collective-bargaining rights; that’s helped Fairfax resist budget-busting wage and benefit demands… By contrast, Montgomery leaders were badly equipped to cope with recession.”
So despite reactions from the left that make it seem as if Walker is trying to kill Christmas, it is entirely reasonable to debate public-sector union collective bargaining—especially when we’re looking at looming budget deficits.
In fact, liberal icons like FDR and Fiorello La Guardia were deeply opposed to collective bargaining for public-sector unions. “The process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service,” Roosevelt wrote.
Collective bargaining for public-sector unions began in the late 1950s and exists for all government workers in only 26 states.
It is not sacrosanct or even particularly longstanding. Indiana’s Gov. Mitch Daniels suspended collective bargaining on his first day on the job, six years ago, by executive order. The state of Indiana has not imploded.
In the spirit of “follow the money,” there’s an additional issue: public-sector union check-offs, which automatically deduct a portion of unionized government workers’ salaries and direct them to union coffers.
In the case of the two national teachers’ unions, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers, the check-offs amount to $2 billion a year, a portly portion of which goes to campaigns and ballot initiatives.
This is taxpayer money being automatically redirected to partisan politics to advance special-interest aims. I would much rather have that money remain in the workers’ wallets or given back to the taxpayers to curtail other cuts in a time of multibillion-dollar budget gaps.
All-or-nothing negotiation techniques rarely bring out the best in a democracy, and reasonable people can conclude that Gov. Walker is overreaching. But to behave as though public-sector union costs, which are directly related to collective bargaining, do not have a deep impact on state and local budgets is not to deal with reality.
Public-sector unions are politically powerful, but the benefits they have secured for their members simply cannot be sustained. Civic debates are derailed when special interests resort to fear-mongering.
Math does not have a partisan bias. We are going broke, and doing nothing is not an option. Start from that premise, and then let’s reason together.

I think you all are missing the message here. This is not about balancing a budget, but about trying to maintain a shrinking middle class. It’s about saying enough is enough. Each and every day American workers are asked to do more for less and I’m proud of the people in Wisconsin saying for no.
Let’s not forget that the government workers in Montgomery County are now being asked to pay 40% of their medical and have not seen a cost of living increase in 5 years.
Whoever said we should take a pinch because our leaders screwed up? Let’s see: cash for clunkers, bank and auto company bailouts and suddenly I feel less like giving up anything I’ve worked years for. No way…not me.
Take a stand now or sit down later when government owns your home and is telling you how you have to live.
By the way, I took that pinch with higher gas and food costs and in the fact that I still support a welfare system that pays off for others. You wanna balance a budget? Trim the welfare fat, stop subsidized housing, illegal immigration, wasted government spending, and oil wars. Or, hire the illegal immigrant, make them legal and pay them the new lower wage you want me to take.
I’m saying hell no! This is what we all agreed too, and if you can’t or don’t want to pay because of a budget shortfall then you better start thinking of ways you’re going to pay me for the job you hired me to do or fire me….period.
