Dear Editor: No Highway Takeback!

It was recommended that I reach out to you and see if my email blast will be published on Sedona Times like Mrs. Rayners.
Thank you,
Liz Smith, Sedona

CITY COUNCIL MEETING TUESDAY, AUG 10th AT 4:30 YOUR ATTENDANCE IS CRITICAL!

Council will vote on a resolution authorizing the City to negotiate a route transfer of SR89A.

Why is our Vice Mayor Hamilton and Councilman Rayner’s wife working so hard to convince us it is worth the debt to the residents of Sedona to take back HWY 89-A?

When the 2002 Council – Dick Ellis, Ernie Straugh, Susan Solomon – voted to take back Hwy 89A Uptown, did we not learn that owning a highway increases the City’s debt?

Why do we need a property tax or added bond debt to own the remainder of highway 89A? What happened to the promise to be fiscally responsible?

Sedona are you ready to face the following?

$600,000 per year needed to resurface the highway, and that money will come from . . .

  • CUTS FOR other necessities such as drainage, streets, parks!
  • CUTS FOR community organizations such as the library, Chamber of Commerce, Sedona Community Center, Arts organizations, Humane Society, Boys and Girls Club!
  • Making BONDING necessary for road repair & maintenance?
  • City responsibility and liability forever!
  • Raising city DEBT for the joy of owning this highway will break our community!
  • Taking back the highway GUARANTEES cuts and reductions to all other Quality of Life organizations in Sedona, you can COUNT on it.

YOUR PRESENCE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!  SPEAK UP AND TELL COUNCIL “NO”!

Please pass this email on, together we can Save Sedona!

Thank you,

 Liz Smith

I do not understand how anyone can throw figures around before the council does their due diligence and presents their facts to the city residents. Throwing around unsubstantiated numbers based on assumptions and rumors is irresponsible. That’s why we got rid of the last council.

    Dear Liz,
Scare Tactics, Scare Tactics. Where on Earth did You get Your misinformation from? Perhaps You should read more, and write less.

Ok, don’t take it back. But don’t install those obnoxious lights. I don’t like these games, and that is clearly all it is — Adot is telling Sedona, my way or the highway. We don’t need no stinking lights on 89A, or the utility bill to run them. What we DO have to look at right now, in the dead in the water KFC building. Whether ADOT or Sedona has the highway, that property will remain a blight until real estate and commercial real estate in particular improves. It could be like that for the next 30 years… and it won’t be ADOT’s problem. Come on, people, we’ve got bigger fish to fry as the economy implodes.

Looks like Liz is so full of misinformation that she can’t event see straight. Her numbers are so out of wack its incredible. Must be friends of City Councilors who were just thrown out of office. You know who you are.

  5. P. Revere says:

I agree that we need to take a larger view of this issue. Allowing cities/towns to take back highways that run through their centers is a national trend because financing infrastructure has crumbled.
