I am from California and this may be a good way to explain things to people that don’t understand:
The owner of the Phoenix Suns basketball team, Robert Sarver, opposes AZ’s new immigration laws.
Arizona ‘s Governor, Jan Brewer, released the following statement in response to Sarver’s criticism of the new law:
“What if the owners of the Suns discovered that hordes of people were sneaking into games without paying?
What if they had a good idea who the gate-crashers are, but the ushers and security personnel were not allowed to ask these folks to produce their ticket stubs, thus non-paying attendees couldn’t be ejected.
Furthermore, what if Suns’ ownership was expected to provide those who sneaked in with complimentary eats and drink? And what if, on those days when a gate-crasher became ill or injured, the Suns had to provide free medical care and shelter?” – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer
Your analygy doesn’t hold up. In the first place, anyone gate crashing at the Suns game has not come to WORK, nor has he risked his life traveling thru the desert to get there.
More than that, however, those we call “illegals” are a lot more industrious than most Americans, and I would challenge you to find an American who was willing to work as hard as they do and in the hot sun.
Lastly, these workers DO pay taxes. Even if they are day workers and that income isn’t taxed, they pay sales tax, taxes on their rent, and all their utilities, just as you and I do.
Next time you make up a scenario, make sure it fits.
You are comparing apples and oranges.
Another way Gov. Brewer’s analogy does not hold up: What if the owners of the Suns discovered that organized crime was sneaking in poor people because they were being paid exorbitant fees by employers who wanted to hire them to do backbreaking work for very little pay? What if the Suns deciced to go after the poor people rather than organized crime and the employers, both of whom were making bank off the availability of the Suns organization? What if the Suns used fear of the poor people to stoke up outrage in the other fans so the fans would then vote them into office so they could continue to support organized crime and greedy employers?
So Karen then I should not have to pay all the other taxes that I do since the illegals don’t. I think that would be fair, just raise all the other taxes they can’t avoid. I am 70 and until welfare made it possible to make a good income and sit on your ass there was no job that Americans wouldn’t do. Back than we raced each other to get any job because it was either work or suffer. We got along just fine without all the hordes we now have so what makes you think we need them now, we don’t and never would have if it wasn’t for welfare
Definitely I agree with Yuma and Karen about comparing apples and oranges. Both opted to avoid the real issue at hand, that being the ongoing lack of enforcement by the Federal government of the immigration law. All legal immigrants entering this, the United States of America, regardless of race, creed, color or from where they originated, have throughout the years been welcomed and embraced with opportunity for a better life. However, the operative word here is “legal”! Why is that so difficult to understand? The last point made by Yuma was very well taken if one were to translate it onto the politicians who presently run the country and are, realistically, aiding and abetting ongoing criminal activities by refusing to secure our borders. Isn’t the dominating force of our elected officials presently supporting greedy employers and, to an extent, organized crime (drug cartels) by not enforcing the law(s)?
Many thanks to Yuma and Karen for substantiating the point made by Governor Jan Brewer.
Bravo, Mr. Harrington. I am reminded of this quote. I believe that many have posted comments and written articles to which the following may apply:
These are my principles. If you don’t like them I have others. -Groucho Marx
Do any of you realize that although illegals may pay sales tax on certain items, utilities, etc., a lot of these hardworking illegals (and I do mean hardworking) send a majority of the money they earn back to their families who live in the country from which they came. I’m not saying I blame them, only that they do NOT pay their proportionate share of the same taxes I pay. JUST BE LEGAL!!!!!!
Karen: They are called illegals is because they are illegals. You need to learn the definition of the word. While you are at it, read up on rule of law. Just because they travel through the desert doesn’t make it ok to break the law. My grandparents floated across the ocean to come here and were legal from day one. The analogy regarding the Suns is valid. And who in the world pays taxes on rent? Karen, you are a fool. Wake up. I spent a week in Sedona on vacation in May. If SB1070 is not fully implemented, I will not return or recommend.
