Again this year, communities across Arizona and the entire nation will come together during National
Police Week, May 13th through May 19th, to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who
made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind.
This year, the names of 362 officers killed in the line of duty are being added to the National Law
Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 362 officers include 162 officers who were
killed during 2011, plus 199 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been
lost to history until now.

Sadly, the fallen officers include five members of the Arizona law enforcement community. Four officers
lost their lives in the line of duty in 2011. These officers were, Sgt Darrell Curley – Navajo Nation DPS,
Officer Bradley Jones – Glendale Police Department, Officer Aaron Peru – San Carlos Apache Police
Department, and Officer Rolando Tirado – Buckeye Police Department. Gila County Deputy Sheriff
Charles Wood who died in the line of duty in January 1911 will also be added to the memorial.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the
calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. Sedona Mayor Rob Adams and the
Sedona City Council issued a proclamation recognizing these periods of honor and remembrance for
officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice in serving their communities as well as those who have
become disabled in the performance of duty.

Sedona Police Officers will be wearing mourning bands on their badges during National Police Week in
memory and honor of those officers that have made these sacrifices. Additionally, Sedona Police
vehicles will be displaying blue ribbons to provide a visible reminder to the community of the dedication
that all law enforcement officers have in the protection of everyone that they serve.

I ask that our entire community please take a moment to give honor and remembrance to all fallen law
enforcement officers and to find a small way to give thanks to our Sedona Police Officers for the difficult
job that they perform on a daily basis in keeping the City of Sedona a safe place to live, work and visit.
Please remember to lower the flag you fly at your home, agency, or business on Tuesday, May 15, 2012,
as we recognize the service and sacrifice of our nation’s law enforcement officers.

The City of Sedona will implement four 10-hour days of operation beginning the week of May 20, 2012. City Hall will be open for business Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and be closed on Fridays. This is the third year this schedule is being put into service and is effective through September 15. In addition, all departments will remain open for lunch.

The Police Department will continue normal daily operations, remaining available and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The ten-hour schedule gives citizens more flexibility in conducting business with the City before or after their work time, as well as over the lunch time.

At 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, a collision in the 2600 block of W. State Route 89A between a passenger vehicle and motorcycle has resulted in a fatality. The operator of the motorcycle, John Conrad, 81 years old from Sedona, was pronounced dead at the Sedona Emergency Center on Wednesday afternoon. No other persons were injured in the collision.

This is an on-going investigation by the Sedona Police Department.

This past weekend, several vehicle burglaries occurred in the Village of Oak Creek — 2 suspects are in-custody — I expect to have further details as part of a media release later today …

Regarding the residential burglary investigation — As you may know, the Sedona Police Department is reporting two additional home burglaries on or about April 27 — evidence collected indicates these are tied to the earlier burglary spree in the VOC and Sedona. YCSO detectives are working with Sedona detectives on these new incidents. In the last few weeks, detectives have served search warrants in the VOC related to leads obtained from the ongoing burglary investigation. No arrests have been made as of now. Evidence collected from these warrants is being processed (fingerprints, DNA, etc). I am hoping for more details on this part of the investigation in the next few days.
