Paving and guardrail work on Interstate 17 from Camp Verde to State Route 179 wraps up next week - Lane restrictions and detours during work hours.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is in the final stages of a $4.2 million project to repave a nine-mile stretch of Interstate 17 between Middle Verde Road in Camp Verde and State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff).

Crews are scheduled to complete repaving and guardrail replacement on I-17 between mileposts 290-299 next week.

Drivers can expect the following impacts next week:

      ● Monday, Aug. 27 through Wednesday. Aug. 29: alternating lane restrictions in both directions from 7 p.m. to noon the following day for paving, guardrail replacement, and shoulder work throughout the project.

      ● Tuesday, Aug. 28: the northbound McGuireville rest area (milepost 297) will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to complete paving the ramps.

      ● Wednesday, Aug. 29: the northbound off and on ramps at SR 179 will be closed between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to allow crews to complete paving the ramps. Northbound drivers on I-17 headed to Sedona will need to continue eight miles north to the Stoneman Lake exit, turn around, and go south to the Sedona turnoff. Drivers headed to Flagstaff from Sedona will need to go five miles south to the McGuireville traffic interchange, turn around, and head north on I-17.

      ● Thursday, Aug. 30: the southbound off and on ramps at SR 179 and the southbound McGuireville rest area will be closed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to allow crews to complete paving the ramps. Southbound drivers on I-17 headed toward Sedona will need to continue five miles south to the McGuireville traffic interchange, turn around, and head north on I-17 to the off ramp at SR 179. Drivers heading south on I-17 from SR 179 will need to go north eight miles to the Stoneman Lake exit, turn around, and head south on I-17.

ADOT advises drivers to allow extra travel time to reach their destinations. The detours will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage.

The improvement project includes the removal of a layer of the existing pavement, repaving the roadway, guardrail replacement and bridge repair. The project, which began on July 1, is scheduled to be completed before the end of September.

Reconstruction of Interstate 17 traffic interchange at Munds Park continues - Bridges complete. Traffic still to be detoured.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has completed reconstruction of the bridges on Interstate 17 at Munds Park, approximately 20 miles south of Flagstaff.

The $10 million project includes reconstructing the southbound and northbound I-17 bridges and ramps, as well as the realignment of Pinewood Boulevard. The first phase of this project, which included the reconstruction of the northbound I-17 bridge and ramps, was completed last year.

Beginning Wednesday (Aug. 22), crews will repave the northbound and southbound on and off ramps.

The ramps will remain open, but traffic will be shifted onto temporary ramps.

Traffic is scheduled to be switched onto the final ramp alignments by the end of August.

Work hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Pinewood Boulevard will be paved under I-17 beginning Tuesday (Aug. 28). Pinewood Boulevard will remain open and traffic is scheduled to be put onto the new alignment by mid-November.

Southbound I-17 traffic is currently being detoured to northbound I-17.

This detour will remain in place until mid-September, when the southbound lanes are paved and traffic is rerouted back to the southbound lanes. After the shift, traffic will be restricted to one lane while crews remove the temporary traffic crossovers, work on guardrail, and complete other project elements.

Crews will return in the summer of 2013 to apply the top layer of asphalt pavement.

The speed limit is reduced throughout the construction zone and drivers are reminded to slow down, proceed through the work zone with caution, and be alert for construction equipment and crews.
