More than $1.1 million has been contributed to the Arizona Community Foundation’s Yarnell Disaster Relief Fund and Yarnell Memorial Scholarship Endowment by individuals, donor funds of ACF and its affiliated Yavapai County Community Foundation, private foundations, and businesses.

Gifts to the Yarnell Disaster Relief Fund currently total about $700,000. Consistent with the Community Foundation’s focus on sustainable solutions, this fund will aid in the post-fire recovery and community rebuilding efforts.

Thanks to an additional $100,000 contributed by our generous local community partners during the last 24 hours, the Arizona Community Foundation (ACF), in partnership with its affiliated Yavapai County Community Foundation (YCCF), is matching the first $125,000 in gifts to its Disaster Relief Fund, dollar-for-dollar, to address needs resulting from the Yarnell Hill Fire. The most recent $25,000 in matching funds came from the Chauncey Foundation.

Gifts to the ACF/YCCF Disaster Relief Fund have been pouring in steadily as word of the fire’s damage and devastating loss of 19 firefighters’ lives continues to make local and national news headlines. Gifts have been made by several ACF donor funds, private foundations and businesses, including Cox Communications and BMO Harris Bank.

Consistent with the Community Foundation’s focus on sustainable solutions, the ACF/YCCF Disaster Relief Fund will aid in the post-fire recovery efforts, including relief for displaced families and individuals, animal welfare, environmental needs, community clean-up, rebuilding and more. ACF and YCCF will work in partnership with local government entities, nonprofits and other community organizations to identify the best ways to serve the communities affected. Distributions will be overseen by a committee of expert staff and community leaders.

The Community Foundation used the same approach in responding to the Monument Fire in Cochise County in 2011. Gifts were matched dollar-for-dollar, with grants going to the Sierra Vista chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to provide food and supplies, to Horse ’n Around Rescue Ranch Foundation and Care for the Horses to move 300 large animals due to burned pasture land, and to Cochise County to help draw down more than $100,000 in federal matching funds to address flooding and damage caused by monsoonal mud and debris in Miller Canyon.

“The long-lasting damage of a wildfire like this is not fully understood until the flames are extinguished,” says Jacky Alling, Chief Philanthropic Services Officer for ACF. “We believe that helping put a community back together once the crisis is over—being in it for the proverbial ‘long haul’—is a unique and critical role that Arizonans rely on the Community Foundation to fulfill, and is in keeping with our focus on enduring philanthropy.”
