Last-Minute Tips to Be Green for Halloween

This Halloween, Waste Management encourages you to Think Green® and save some, too, by modifying traditional routines in favor of more eco-friendly habits.

Here are a few tips to help you reduce, reuse and recycle this Halloween:

Start a composting project. Halloween jack-o-lanterns, food scraps, coffee grounds and other organic, biodegradable yard and household waste are perfect items to get your compost bin started.

Make your own costumes. Put less stress on your wallet by opting for costumes made of reusable or recycled materials. You can find Halloween costume materials from thrift stores or yard sales.

Use recyclable bags for your trick-or-treaters. Make creating unique trick-or-treat bags a new family tradition, or simply put a pillowcase or reusable bag to good use. Avoiding the plastic jack-o-lantern-type containers will avoid clutter, save money and add a dash of originality to your trick-or-treater’s costume.

Help keep neighborhoods clean while trick-or-treating. Show gratitude to your local treat-givers by carrying an extra bag to pick up litter in the neighborhood along the way. Candy wrappers can be a big source of trash on local streets during Halloween.

Give eco-friendly treats. Local organic groceries and health food stores offer a wide range candy from organic chocolates to organic lollipops. Produced using more environmentally friendly methods, these goodies will help you to be good to the earth. Consider non-candy items like pencils made from recycled materials or stickers.

Walk instead of drive. Rather than drive to other neighborhoods, stay close to home and trick-or-treat in your own neighborhood. By walking from house to house, you can reduce fuel consumption and air pollution.

Throw a green Halloween party. Keep bins within reach to encourage recycling of plastic containers, cans, paper, cardboard and glass.

As you green your Halloween, be sure to make it safe, too. Prepare for trick-or-treaters by removing any tripping hazards from your yard or porch and replace burned-out light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescents.

Have fun and keep safe.
