Yavapai County Unsung Heroes

It is spring; the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the volunteers are abundant in the Verde Valley. Once again, the monthly Yavapai County Unsung Heroes Volunteer Award is a couple’s game.

Terry and Carla Trujillo have been the sun in many people’s lives through their volunteer work with the Special Olympics, coaching basketball. Nominated by John and Sherry Herring, the Trujillo’s are amazing coaches who have received only the highest commendation for their work. With their recommendation letter, the Herrings attached several letters written by Terry and Carla’s players and one of the letters truly stood out; it showed the true impact of the nominated Trujillo’s work. It was written by a mother who had enrolled her son in the Special Olympics, Maria Townsend.

Townsend wrote: “The coaches have a lot of patience and the Olympians feel that they really care and like to teach them. I really appreciate the coaches for doing all they do…they deserve an award for the best coaches ever.” The praise went on and on.

Terry and Carla Trujillo have been coaching Special Olympics players for over a decade, demonstrating their extraordinary ability to teach, guide, and mentor. Their countless hours of volunteer work have helped many Special Olympians to compete and acquire skills to be successful and yet according to Carla, the athletes are the true heroes.

On the beautiful morning of Wednesday, March 16 2011, Terry and Carla Trujillo accepted the Unsung Hero Volunteer Award on the “Mark in the Morning Show” presented by Supervisor A. G. “Chip” Davis.

If you have an Unsung Hero in mind, please contact DeShannan at Supervisor Davis’ office at (928) 639-8110 or email deshannan.young@co.yavapai.az.us.
