Yavapai County Superior Court Appoints COPE Chairman

John Morris appointed to chair COPE committee

Sedona AZ (August 9, 2016) – On August 3, 2016, Chief Justice Scott Bales appointed Chief Adult Probation Officer John Morris of Prescott (AZ) as Chairman of the Committee On Probation Education (COPE). This committee is responsible for statewide certification of adult and juvenile probation officers. It also oversees several statewide programs including the Intensive Probation Institute and Probation Certification Academy.

The Mission Statement of COPE is:

“The mission of the Committee on Probation Education is to enhance the ability of Probation Officers, Surveillance Officers and Detention Officers to protect the public by:

1. Maintaining a statewide approach to training and education which assures competency, consistency and continuity of knowledge and practice.
2. Proving training and education which promotes professional growth, enhances necessary skills and prepares officers to develop in their role.
3. Continually assessing the educational needs of officers, the rehabilitative needs of the offenders, and the public’s need for safety. ”

Morris has been a member of COPE for the past two years and is proud of the work the committee performs. They encourage evidence-based practices which helps keep our community safer.

Presiding Judge David L. Mackey stated, “I am very proud of Chief Morris’ appointment as Chair. The Chief Justice’s appointment is a recognition of Chief Morris’ leadership in Yavapai County and in his ability to lead this committee in providing quality education to probation departments throughout the state.”
