Yavapai College Partners With Non-Profits

Yavapai College logoSedona AZ (October 24, 2013) Yavapai College employees have selected the Central Arizona Food Bank in Cottonwood and Prescott Area Shelter Services in Prescott as their non-profit partner organizations for the 2013-14 academic year.

The College has a practice of involving employees in the selection of two area nonprofits each year to support—one in the Verde Valley and one in the Prescott area. “Yavapai College employees chose the area of ‘families and children’ as this year’s focus for service and giving,” said Service and Giving Committee co-Chair Rose Hurley.

“We received 10 applications,” Hurley explained, “and we asked our employees to select their choice after reviewing information about each agency. It is a very collaborative, inclusive process here at YC, and we are proud that we can work together to support the fine non-profit efforts here in our own community.”

The Central Arizona Food Bank undertakes a program to provide the food for approximately 150 backpacks every week that school is in session. The backpacks, which are filled by volunteers, are provided to schools that distribute them to children who have the greatest need. The backpack program has grown from about 30 per week three years ago to 150 now.

Central Arizona Food Bank Assistant Director John Ask said their organization is pleased to have been selected “because we’re using all the proceeds to help our backpack program. That’s about 150 students every week. It’s very helpful to us.”

Prescott Area Shelter Services offers two main programs:  The Prescott Area Women’s Shelter and a new Family Shelter Home, both programs provide safe, secure environments for single women, women with children and now full families.

“Our organization is thrilled for this opportunity to work so closely with Yavapai College,” said Prescott Area Shelter Services Executive Director Carmen Frederic, “The support that will be provided will be so crucial to us, as we have recently added more programming to what we do.”

The two non-profit organizations with which Yavapai College partnered this past year are the Coalition for Compassion and Justice and the CASA® Children’s Center.

“The Coalition for Compassion and Justice was grateful to be chosen as the first-year nonprofit partner for Yavapai College,” said Coalition for Compassion and Justice Executive Director Gail Kenny, “Not only did we benefit from faculty and staff member financial contributions, but also from the groups who began partnering with CCJ . . . Even though our specific year of partnership is over, we continue to reap the rewards of these established connections.”

  2. I’m very pleased that the Central AZ Food Bank was selected. John is very community minded in many different areas. The food bank receives no food and no support from St Mary’s food bank who is contracted to supply food to food banks throughout AZ. They refuses to supply Cen AZ FB with much needed food for the Verde Valley. The people of the Verde Valley should be up in arms over this and the government should look into why St Mary’s is not doing what they are contracted to do. Where’s the food and where’s the money????
