Working Inmates Benefit Selves and Yavapai County Community

yavapai county sheriff's office logoSedona AZ (September 24, 2015) – The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office routinely employs inmates housed at the Camp Verde Detention for duties in and outside the Detention Center. Not only do the inmates benefit from positive use of time, but there is a cost savings benefit to county taxpayers.

Over the last few months, Camp Verde Detention personnel have continued to seek out and arrange work projects for both men and woman inmates. Following the completion of these tasks, many of the inmates thanked the YCSO security team for the opportunity. Achieving a goal through the process of completing the projects also has the benefit of fostering better attitudes and behavior for the inmates involved.

Inmates allowed to participate in these various assignments are screened and considered minimum risk. Their compensation includes credit against the daily meal expense and a small weekly allowance.

Recent projects include:

1. Trash laden areas just north of Black Canyon City off Tara Springs Road – ongoing this week. inmates trash 1inmates trash 1inmates trash 1

2. Landscaping and weed abatement around the VFW hall in Humboldt.

4. Ongoing cleanup of Highway 260 sections in the Camp Verde and Cottonwood areas can be seen by travelers. As you drive by, remember to keep our highways, byways, mountains and deserts litter free.

We thank the Yavapai County inmates for their work to keep America and Arizona beautiful.

  1. Thanks for the effort,

There are many benefits of this effort by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office and the inmates that perform these tasks.

If these tasks and efforts are performed routinely throughout the year and anti-litter messages are taught in our schools then a “real” change in our culture will be noticed and Arizona could champion this effort nationally in the form of economic development.

The efforts ADOT and the ADOT Adopt-A-Highway program are critical to changing the habits of those that continue to trash Arizona Highways. ADOT must mow the highway shoulders and medians and inspire their Adopt-A-Highway groups. ADOT must either clean the highway medians or allow the Adopt-A-Highway groups to do it.

It’s too bad that more people don’t see and respond to this effort that benefits all residents of Arizona.
