Woman Returns Home to Find Burglar

Coconino County Patrol MapSedona AZ (April 16, 2016) – On Thursday, April 14, 2016, at about 3:30 in the afternoon, 911 dispatchers received a call from a woman reporting a burglary in progress. Responding to the Mount Elden Lookout Road home, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office deputies met with the caller and learned she had not been assaulted by the suspect and was uninjured.

According to the victim, she exited her vehicle after returning home and saw an adult male leaving her house. She confronted the man and asked him what he was doing. The suspect, carrying food items and bottled alcohol, apologized and said that his car had broken down and asked to take one of her vehicles. The woman responded no. The suspect then left the area on foot to the west of the residence into a wooded area.

An on duty CCSO Patrol Sergeant began searching for the suspect and spoke with several hikers and bikers in the area. Several offered that they saw a man matching the suspect’s description in a vehicle stopped on Schultz Pass Road. The Sergeant went to the location and observed a vehicle alongside the road and made contact with its driver, Arthur Zampini, 26, originally from Glendale, Arizona, but currently homeless and transient.

Mr. Zampini was similar in appearance to the description of the suspect provided by the burglary victim and admitted to the burglary. He also admitted to driving two of the victim’s vehicles away from the residence, only to return them. When asked why he drove the vehicles, Zampini replied “…because they were cool.”

After inventorying her home, the burglary victim reported that cash, miscellaneous food items and bottled alcohol were missing. Arthur Zampini was booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility for one count of second degree burglary, one count of first degree trespass, two counts of unauthorized use of motor vehicle, and one count of cultivation of marijuana.
