Study: Uranium Contamination Widespread Around Grand Canyon April 1, 2010 | AZPM

Uranium is found widely in the Grand Canyon watershed. Some of the toxic metal ends up in the Colorado River, and the water supply for millions of people. Mining companies are filing hundreds of new claims to explore for uranium around the Grand Canyon. But a new study suggests more mining will add to the already substantial uranium contamination in groundwater and soil and the canyon.Mining supporters point to uranium exploration as a source for more jobs. But Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter Director Sandy Bahr and Taylor McKinnon, Public Lands Campaigns Director for the Center for Biological Diversity disagree. Both say the study’s findings mean uranium poses a direct threat to drinking water supplies.
