  2. What if?

What if Keep Sedona Beautiful, Prescott Litter Lifters and Folksville USA joined forces?

Could these three groups make a combined difference in “America-Arizona the Beautiful”?

How would this combined effort enhance the economies of the areas they serve if they worked together?

Folksville USA has reached out to these two organizations and is awaiting a response.

You will be receiving stories about a Northern Arizona effort to restore the beauty to “America-Arizona the Beautiful.

If you seriously consider the awareness, education and action of the folks mentioned, you should recognize a “Golden” opportunity to change the littering activities of Arizona and to become the role models for the nations Adopt-A-Highway program.

If you seriously look at the types and quantity of highway litter throughout our state and particularly on our three Arizona veteran’s highways, we should all be embarrassed to say we honor our veterans by allowing this activity to continue.

ADOT should be embarrassed at the type and quantity of its and the ADOT contractor debris that has been abandon and recklessly tossed into the grass. Other than the now 50 Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) groups a bunch of veterans have united in the Jerome, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Sedona, Cornville and Camp Verde AZ area, the ability of ADOT to manage this taxpayer funded program is a failure.

ADOT management has dumbed the AAH program down to the point it is miserably ineffective.

The time to meet and chart a consolidated effort to take our lumps and unite to clean our Arizona highways is now! Think “Economics 101” who wants to vacation, move to, move to and purchase a home, being a business with potential jobs to an area that looks like a dump?

You all may want to visit our Highway 260 and Highway 89A connecting Camp Verde, Cottonwood and Sedona and see what has transpired. ADOT workers and staff from Flagstaff and Prescott have been our partners in this effort.

What are you folks going to do to help us restore the beauty to “America & Arizona the not-so-Beautiful”?

    Please contact me at 928-202-1186.

  5. Camp Verde Russ Martin Rocks!

  6. Camp Verde Leaders continue to lead.

Camp Verde leaders will discuss being involved in a effort to work with local ADOT Adopt-A-Highway groups four times per year.

This topic will be discussed August 13, 2014 in Camp Verde.

The hope is that other Verde Valley Mayors and Manager will replicate this effort.

Proposed Press Release to be presented to Camp Verde leaders …… DRAFT

“America the Beautiful” – Camp Verde, Arizona
    Highway 260 Litter Event August 16, 2014

The Town Manager and I would like to invite all community leaders, Town Council members, town employees, businesses, citizens, youth groups (12 years of age or older) and organizations to join the Camp Verde Town Council on the third Saturday of February, May, August and November for the sole purpose of assisting our local ADOT Adopt-A-Highway groups.

Camp Verde hopes to provide assistance to those ADOT Adopt-A-Highway groups located between mile posts MP-207 (Cottonwood) and MP-228 (Camp Verde) on Highway 260. It is our hope that other Verde Valley communities will join in this effort so we may all improve the image and economy of Camp Verde, Verde Valley, Yavapai County and Arizona.

If your ADOT Adopt-A-Highway group could use a helping hand please contact (contact person’s name) at (928) 554 –XXXX, Town of Camp Verde with the scheduling details of your ADOT Adopt-A-Highway group.

We will be formatting our efforts on a program that was launched 2009 in Cornville, Arizona by “Folksville USA and America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs whose mission is empowering our nation’s youth through picking up highway litter as a fund raising, teaching, learning and earning opportunity.

As a community, Camp Verde has a chance to be part of an effort that is receiving national attention and it certainly will benefit our community. These four evenly spaced litter events will be a fantastic opportunity for Camp Verde residents and our youth to get to know each other. There is something for everyone to do.

The Town of Camp Verde would also like to recognize our local Adopt-A-Highway groups each November after the final litter event.

If Kentucky can have the reputation for the longest number miles (400 miles) of garage sales, why can’t Camp Verde help to establish the participation by the ADOT Adopt-A-Highway groups connecting Cottonwood to Show Low?

“Many hands with one goal and America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs Empowering our nation’s youth” is a goal we wish to be part of.

  7. Camp Verde Presentation based on

WHAT IF OUR NATION’S YOUTH HAD TO EARN THEIR FUNDING?

Could this same message be taken to Sedona, Cottonwood, Clarkdale and Jerome Mayors and Managers?

Opening statement: Could the residents and leaders of Camp Verde imagine the outcome if every parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent and business made it a requirement for the youth in their families and community to earn their funding needs by being part of the “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” opportunity?

The “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” opportunity provides a teaching, learning and earning opportunity that will improve the image and economy of Camp Verde, Yavapai County and Arizona by empowering our youth.

Our youth will have an opportunity to achieve skills including, marketing, performing a service, billing for their services rendered and collecting their reward for their efforts plus preparing them for their future as business owners, employees and role models.

*These randomly selected past and future memorable occurrences must be lead by our nation’s youth for they are our future.

    1) Camp Verde Bugle November 22, 2011: Guinness Book of World Records (300 people-404 Bags of trash and 2 mattresses). Don Hanks and his family picked up all 404 bags of trash and delivered them to Rusty’s Morningstar Ranch where adults with autism sorted and recycled the contents.

    2) Camp Verde Bugle December 25, 2011: “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” was conceived and youth group involvement has consisted of Verde Valley School, American Heritage Academy-Camp Verde, Cottonwood Boy Scout Troop and Cottonwood Boys & Girls Club. Involving our youth is critical to reversing the trend of littering, frequent education and participation in this effort must occur. Without education, we are doomed!

    3) Camp Verde Bugle March 21, 2013: Russ Martin, Charlie German and the Camp Verde town council became the second community leaders to ever recognize the efforts of Verde Valley ADOT Adopt-A-Highway Groups in almost six years (Sedona was the first). This recognition should occur every year with Gold 4x, Silver 3x, Bronze 2x and Lead 1x certificates based on ADOT Adopt-A-Highway “Activity Reports”.

    4) In 2013-2014 the national American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations told our story to over 500, 000 Post Commanders and members. The Arizona House of Representatives, Congressman Paul Gosar and Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick recognized our efforts.

    5) In the past 6 years our efforts have been featured locally and nationally in newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Just Google “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” and see the results.

    6) Only through partnering with ADOT, community residents and businesses will the effort succeed. The regularly and evenly spaced litter events, ADOT mowing and displaying the litter bags on the highway for 3-4 days (education and awareness) are a “must do” for successes to occur.

    7) Without Steve Ayers reporting our stories when he was with the Camp Verde Bugle and Verde Independent we would not have had near the results we have enjoyed. Bill Helm has followed in Steve Ayers footsteps and has kept this effort alive with his coverage of American Heritage Academy-Camp Verde.

Camp Verde is being invited to lead and be the first to invite other community Mayors and Managers to join in … Will Camp Verde lead?

Charlie German – Mayor Camp Verde, AZ

*If local ADOT Adopt-A-Highway groups will grant each Camp Verde Town Council members (by name)“Volunteer Coordinator” status then council members may legally clean up sections of the highway without working with the ADOT Adopt-A-Highway Permittee (those whose name appears on the highway sign). This will provide many more opportunities and options for everyone. This may be done by ADOT Adopt-A-Highway Permittee’s sending an email to ADOT listing the names of those wanting to be a “Volunteer Coordinator”.

  8. Camp Verde leaders Moving forward,

At a Work Session on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, Mayor Charlie German and the Camp Verde Town Council considered moving ahead with being active participants and promoting four ADOT Adopt-A-Highway events per year.

The Camp Verde leaders are also considering inviting the 21 Highway 260 Adopt-A-Highway groups located between Camp Verde and Cottonwood to their chambers and recognize them for their efforts some time in November.

Though this is a work in progress, it looks like a done deal after some I’s are dotted and T’s crossed.

There were educators and businesses in attendance that are and want to be part of this effort.

  9. Someone should be saying thanks to these “Role Models” from AHA.

Too bad that the Town of Camp Verde Public Works Department didn’t leave the bags in place over the Labor Day holiday as a means of education, awareness and recognition of the efforts of American Heritage Academy and after each litter event for the same reasons noted.

  10. On August 28, 2014, American Heritage Academy – Camp Verde partnered with Tire Pro Automotive in Camp Verde and Sedona to clean 1.3 miles of Finne Flats RD in Camp Verde. These students recovered 21 bags of trash in about two hours.

There is much more to this story and it involves these current participants as well as those that started this effort almost six years ago, the real question is what will the future results of what was started be in the future?

American Heritage Academy-Camp Verde, Tire Pro Automotive-Camp Verde and Sedona plus the Town of Camp Verde have been consistent “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” participants and supporters of the effort to improve the image and economy of the Town of Camp Verde, the Verde Valley and Arizona.

The Town of Camp Verde, led by Town Manager Russ Martin, Mayor Charlie German and town council members are considering leading an effort to unite Camp Verde residents and other community leaders and to encourage the residents of all communities to join them in a comprehensive anti-littering campaign.

As it stands, the Town of Camp Verde leaders are discussing the possibility of promoting and participating in four “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” events and encouraging other community youth groups to use this opportunity to participate in volunteerism and/or fund raising as American Heritage Academy has done.

Folksville USA makes it their responsibility to encourage community leaders, businesses and residents to support and thank the youth groups that use the “BagReadyJobs” effort to “earn” their funding and to share these youth group and partnering stories with the nation.

The efforts and future success of what is now being taken on by the Town of Camp Verde will require the future support of all residents of the Verde Valley regardless of their title.

It would be my hope that Verde Valley businesses and residents make it their goal to support the youth groups that get involved in the “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” effort for the sake of improving the image and economy of the Verde Valley and Arizona.

  12. Dear Sedona leaders and residents,

For those of you that don’t know where Camp Verde is located, it about a 30 minute drive from Sedona and their community efforts will have a positive impact on the entire Verde Valley.

Where is Sedona’s Mayor and City Manager (existing and incoming) on recognizing those that make Sedona and the Verde Valley more appealing to those that live and visit our area?

Does the lack of recognition by the Sedona leadership of those that make the Verde Valley truly beautiful indicate that they don’t appreciate the efforts other than Keep Sedona Beautiful?

I haven’t forgotten that Mayor Adams and the Council did recognize the efforts of the Adopt-A-Highway groups “once” in almost six years.

What does the inability to say thanks to those Adopt-A-Highway groups that clean our highways say about the leadership of all Mayors, Managers, Councils, Chamber of Commerce organizations and residents?

I have a contact list of the local ADOT Adopt-A-Highway groups for anyone that would like to thank them …. just let me know. Your silence is very loud!

  13. Thank you, Gary Chamberlain, for mentioning that at least at one time a Sedona City Council was capable of displaying sound judgment by taking action to support the efforts of your affiliation with Adopt-A-Highway six years ago. Having been in attendance at that meeting I had the privilege, first hand, of listening to your heartfelt presentation which resulted positively for the good of everyone including the reputation of City of Sedona.

Things changed since then. These days City of Sedona government has become focused on serving only selective special interest groups and although they may give lip service to “think green” really don’t much give a hoot about trash on the highway, pollution, harmful effects from Smart Meters, neglected road maintenance, or other, apparently to them, insignificant nuisances relating to the health, safety, and “welfare” of the general public.

The term “welfare” becomes a sticky wicket since the word itself is conveniently diverted to subjective interpretation and under this regime is drowned in a muck of rhetoric beginning but not ending with nonsense that the world’s population is somehow better off under the City designated care of the Sedona Chamber of Commerce and other self-serving entities with narrow margins confining benefit to a select few.

Shunning and neglecting your efforts is shameful but you are not alone. You see, everyone outside this City Council’s “cultural esteem” are considered mere stepchildren at best so it by no means leaves your Adopt-A-Highway an exclusive group.

A few years ago when I called to have a snake removed from my property, the gentleman performing the duty explained to me it was a harmless gopher snake, probably equivalent to a “teenager” in human years adding: “Are you sure you don’t want it to stay here because it’s beneficial for keeping the rodent etc. population at bay.” I thanked him for the offer but suggested maybe the “teenager” might be more appreciated elsewhere. However, during our conversation I mentioned that a next door neighbor had recently killed a rattle snake to which even I objected.

This very wise man quite loudly explained: “He shouldn’t have done that. If we didn’t have snakes we would be knee deep in rats.”

Could it be we are lacking snakes at Sedona City Hall and in fact it’s that rats that have taken over?

Who will say thanks? I’ll pass your comments on to those that make us all look good.

Your readers may want to thank the AZ Footy soccer coach and its players for they cleaned up 3 miles of Highway 260 and 89A this past weekend.

You may also want to thank American Legion Post 25 Cottonwood for their weekend efforts on Highway 260. Dick James (veteran) is their organizer.

I’m sure these folks can provide you with a teaching. leaning and earning story about how the image and economy is effected by the contents of their bags.
