Tornado and Storm Watch Issued

Much of central and northern Arizona will remain under a tornado watch, meaning tornadoes are possible, until 5 p.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service said that two tornadoes touched down in Bellemont, Arizona, west of Flagstaff, around 6 AM, derailing nearly 30 parked Burlington-Sante Fe train cars and severely damaging over a dozen homes and businesses. The trainmen on-board the derailed cars were unhurt, and no life-threatening injuries were reported from those evacuated from damaged homes and businesses. The BSF train was not carrying hazardous cargo but main line rail service is halted until the derailed cars obstruction can be cleared.

In other areas of the storm system, two Utah high school students are hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after seeking shelter under a tree that was hit by lightning. Several people have died as the result of highway accidents caused by the storms in the southwest.

Severe weather is expected to continue throughout Wednesday. Please take necessary precautions and dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.
