Tohono O’odham Glendale Casino Project Opposed

Sedona AZ (July 15, 2014)The following statement is from Gila River Gov. Gregory Mendoza concerning the Glendale City Council’s 4-3 vote in support of the Tohono O’odham casino project:

The Gila River Indian Community, along with tens of thousands of Glendale residents, Governor Jan Brewer, virtually the entire Arizona Congressional delegation and a coalition of Indian tribes across Arizona and the United States, remains opposed to the Tohono O’odham Nation’s proposed casino in the middle of a Glendale neighborhood.

The flip-flop of a single City Council member and today’s 4-3 vote on the casino issue does not change the facts surrounding the Nation’s proposed mega-gaming complex. While we are disappointed that these Glendale Council members have chosen to side with a southern Arizona government entity over municipal and tribal neighbors nearby, the fact remains that two legal challenges stand in opposition to this project, as does H.R. 1410, a Congressional measure that will prevent Las Vegas-style gambling near homes, small businesses, schools and places of worship. H.R. 1410 passed the House in a landslide vote and awaits action in the Senate. Additionally, the Nation has yet to receive permission to game on this land from the U.S. Department of Interior.

Because this project poses a direct threat to the balance of tribal gaming in Arizona and will have serious impacts on nearby cities and towns, our Community and this casino’s many opponents will continue to do everything possible to stop this project and the potential proliferation of casinos across the Valley. Cities like Glendale would be wise to take the Nation’s projections and promises with a very large grain of salt. Unfortunately, as we have learned firsthand, this tribe’s word has not always been their bond.

Ruin your own neighborhood, casinos bring crime, prostitution, vagrancy, burglary, drugs, alcoholism; Glendale doesn’t need or want this because it’s holding its own as a true neighborhood within the urban mecca. We want real jobs, manufacturing jobs, not lousy low paying, high crime tourist service jobs. The town needs to do real work attracting jobs for its citizens, not get paid off by big money.

I’m in agreement with Selma Ma. Glendale politicians need to get off of easy street and do right by its residents.

The money that Glendale has already spent fighting the casino could have paid for the in fracture needed. Now that 3 1/2 million has already been spent they will have to look for another 3 1/2 million. As far as ruining the neighbor hood that is bull. What is really ruining the state is letting the Indians pay next to nothing to the state. If you go to casino’s today you will find it is hardly ever paying a taxable jackpot anymore. What they are really doing is shafting the players and a portion of that is what they are paying the state. Example in Illinois they allowed the bars to put in 8 slots with 2 quarter maximum and the little city of Streitic Illinois paid just the (city) itself $300,000 in a month. Now this is a city of only 16,000 so do the math and it will tell you we are getting the shaft. They have also put in gambling like roulette which was never okay-ed by the state so are doing as they please. The big mistake made was when the voters gave them the sole control of gambling in this state.
