The Wonder of Human Nature

Sedona, AZ — By Tommy Acosta…

One can always find something wonderful about human nature, something that reminds us we are all part of the human family and that there are those of us who will put others above themselves when the need arises. The plane crash that occurred Nov. 13 near Sedona is one fine example of people coming together In the face of tragedy and doing what they can to negate its impact.

When the Piper plane went down and the lone survivor radioed for help, Pink jeep Tours immediately dispatched specially-equipped vehicles to the scene to help out. They weren’t asked to do it. They did it on their own, selflessly.

Even more amazing was the firefighter who saw the smoke from the wreckage and plunged into the bush to find the victim and help him to where he could be airlifted to a hospital. What were the odds that a firefighter, and not just a holiday tourist, would have been close enough to the accident to have been there to help? Only in Sedona!

Again, he was not asked to help. He just took action to help others in need, with no thought of his own safety or danger.

In the face of economic uncertainty there seems to be a sense growing in Sedona of a great shift approaching. For the working citizens and retirees living on fixed incomes it is a truly trying time but there appears to be a glimmer of hope that whatever the test is now, there is something better waiting around the corner.

People are coming together, pooling resources, sharing meals, homes, attending services and reaching inside, spiritually, for strength and stability. The Holidays are coming and this year’s could be one of the scariest we have experienced in decades.

For those insulated against the economic chaos this could be a major opportunity to help others less fortunate by giving to the local food banks and those organizations in Sedona that help those in need..

I am reminded of a Daffy Duck cartoon I saw a long time ago where Daffy is in complete denial of the approaching winter while the squirrels and all the other animals in the forest were busy stashing supplies to survive the cold months. While Daffy lounged and played they worked hard and when winter came Daffy found him self hungry, cold and homeless; face-to-face with a wolf who wanted to eat him and vice-versa.

We as a city have been in denial of the economic freeze now chilling our tourist business and we are now in the same place as Daffy was. The time of reckoning with the wolf is at hand.
