So That We Remember Them

rememberSedona AZ (February 27, 2015) – Northern Arizona University’s Department of Global Languages and Cultures presents So That We Remember Them: A Multilingual Dramatic & Artistic Commemoration of the European WWII Experience, a multilingual dramatic and artistic commemoration of the events surrounding World War II, featuring art, music, literary and theatrical recitations performed by NAU faculty, students, and community members.

Some of the titled performances, which include bilingual poetry and literary readings from the 1940s and music, such as a resistance songs performed in French and Russian and Lili Marleen in German, will be preceded and followed by dramatic performances from Martin Sherman’s Bent, a renowned 1979 American Broadway play about two homosexual men during the Holocaust, as well as a scene from Charlie Chaplin’s film, The Great Dictator.

· Se questo è un uomo (If This is a Man) by Primo Levi (1947) in Italian and English

· “Le Chant des Partisans” (“Song of the Partisans”) (resistance song, in French and Russian, 1943)

· “First they came for the Socialists…” Excerpt from Martin Niemoeller in English

· “Zhdi Menya” (“Wait for Me”) by Konstantin Simonov (1941) in Russian

· The Diary of Anne Frank (1947) excerpts in Dutch and English Sephardic poetry from Spain in Ladino

· “Je Trahirai demain” (“I Will Betray Tomorrow”) by Marianne Cohn (1943) in French

· “Lili Marleen” (sung in German)

· “Todesfuge” (Death Fugue) by Paul Celan (1948) in German with musical accompaniment

· Bent – Scene from Martin Sherman’s 1979 Broadway play (in English)

· Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator Speech (1940) in English

· “Liberté” (“Liberty”) by Paul Eluard (1942) in French

· “A Song of Joy” sung in several languages

The evening begins promptly at 6:00 pm. on March 12, 2015, at Fire Creek Coffee, 22 East Route 66, Flagstaff, Arizona. All are welcome and it is a free event.
