Sedona Vehicle Burglaries Alert

Sedona AZ (June 17, 2012) – On June 16, 2012, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies were notified of three vehicle burglaries occurring at trail heads in the Village of Oak Creek area. Locations include the Long Canyon trail head, Devil’s Bridge trail head, and Fossil Creek trail head access area.

In the case of the Long Canyon vehicle burglary, suspect(s) busted a rear passenger window to access the interior. Items stolen include a purse, cell phone, hiking books and hotel registration paperwork. The victims believed they returned just as the suspects were leaving in a faded or light blue 1900’s sedan.

One of the suspect’s was described as 5’10”, 220 pounds, brown hair, clean shaven, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

In the Devil’s Bridge incident, suspect(s) also broke a vehicle window to gain access and steal an IPOD and wallet.

The Fossil Creek theft involved a rental vehicle. The victim’s left vehicle windows partially open allowing the suspect(s) an apparent easy point of entry. Stolen items included a wallet, cash, camera, and IPOD.

All thefts occurred after 1:00 PM while the respective victims were hiking.

Avoid leaving valuables, especially identification and credit cards, in an unattended vehicle. If you must bring valuables, hide them in a locked compartment or the trunk before you arrive. This reduces your chance of being target by suspect(s) watching your actions.

Always lock your vehicle with the windows fully closed. When you arrive at the trail head, scan your surroundings for suspicious vehicles and persons. Note vehicle descriptions and license plate information if safe to do so. Take a “tourist” photo that includes the suspicious vehicle in the image. If you see any signs of vehicle break-ins, call law enforcement immediately.

Please share this information with visitors to the area who may not be aware of this crime series. Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260.
