Sedona Recycles and Oak Creek Watershed Receive Funds

Sedona AZ (March 1, 2010) – In 2010, Sedona Recycles received funding from the Sedona Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Arizona Community Foundation, to purchase recycling bins for a new free 24-hour recycling drop-off location in Oak Creek Canyon. Service of the proposed site would be donated by Sedona Recycles and all material collected would be recycled at Sedona Recycles, the Verde Valley’s only nonprofit recycling center.

“We believe a recycling site in Oak Creek Canyon will encourage and increase recycling by residents, businesses, and visitors to Oak Creek Canyon by providing a more convenient recycling location,” said Meghan Kincheloe, Sedona Recycles Director of Community Development, “but we won’t be able to provide this service without finding a suitable donated site for placement of the recycling bins.”

The Oak Creek Watershed Council is also looking for a space to temporarily house a small commercial dumpster on three long weekends through its Keep Oak Creek Canyon Beautiful anti-litter program.

“Our bin is only for Canyon visitors on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends,” said Barry Allan, Executive Director, “and it makes sense to partner with Sedona Recycles so we minimize the space and reduce the traffic impact.”

“The sheer numbers of Canyon visitors on the long weekends increases the potential for litter and trash to be left on trails, in Oak Creek, and our beautiful highway 89A,” continued Allan. “We’re trying to eliminate the continuing pollution of Oak Creek and we really need help from Canyon residents.”

“If you are willing to donate space for the recycling and litter bins, or would like to suggest a possible location, please contact me at Sedona Recycles, (928) 204-1185 as soon as possible,” said Kincheloe, “A lot of time and funds have been allocated to this project, and its success will ultimately depend on feedback and cooperation from the Canyon community.”
