Sedona Political Correctness

Sedona AZ (April 14, 2014)The following is a letter to the SedonaEye.com editor:

What’s the true significance of the recent craze to be “politically correct?” After Sedona incorporated, seven candidates were elected to serve as Sedona’s “City Council” one of whom was selected by the council to sit as presiding Mayor. They were called “Council Members” (Councilman/Councilwoman) but at some point in time a change was made to label them “Councilors.” When did that come about? I do not know but to this day my preference is to use the original labels: Councilman/Councilwoman: a combination of seven Council Members to make up our City Council.

Of interest is that in reading both the Arizona Republic and the Sedona Red Rock News, neither publication refers to members of City Councils, anywhere, as “Councilors.”

Concluding the City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 8th, during the reports on current events, Councilman John Martinez interestingly enough made a point of relating the upcoming Posse Ground event on Saturday, April 19th, as an “Easter Egg Hunt” prefaced by his decision to refrain from being politically correct by not using the posted event terms as “Celebration of Spring” egg hunt.

In an e-mail to Councilman Martinez, with copies to the entire City Council, I thanked him for that action. Responses came from Councilmen Martinez and DiNunzio, Mayor Adams, and Councilwomen Barbara Litrell and Jessica Williamson. Councilmen Mike Ward and Dan McIlroy did not reply.

Sedona City Council

Councilman DiNunzio was in support of using the term Easter, while both Councilwomen Litrell and Williamson were not. Mayor Adams opted to remain neutral on the subject. During the course of additional e-mail exchanges, specifically I asked who it was decided on changing the name and when did that occur. Further, I asked the same question relating to when the term “Christmas Tree” had been changed to “Holiday Tree.” Both questions remain unanswered.

How important is all of this? That, obviously, remains a personal opinion but do any of us, regardless of our preference, need to have others deciding for us under questionable circumstances? As the LGBT and Moment of Silence decisions were made during an open meeting, why weren’t these?

When our nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C. and the White House itself continue to provide a seasonal “Christmas Tree” and sponsor an annual “Easter Egg Roll” on the White House lawn, does that mean their grasp on “political correctness” is defective?

Can it be true that the unidentified, high handed holier than thou snoots in Sedona who are calling the shots and taking it upon themselves to make decisions and changes according to what “they” think is best trumps the nation’s capitol on “political correctness?”

Well guess what? Contrary to their apparent interpretation, they were NOT elected to use their positions as a means of forcing their personal opinions and agendas on Sedona voters.

The true underlying threat here, in my opinion, remains in the question: What other decisions are being made behind closed doors of which we are not aware?

  1. Rachel Murdoch, Manager of Parks and Recreation, has advised me of the following:

    “Hi Eddie,
I think there is a little confusion here. I never “changed a name”. When I was hired 6 years ago, there was no Easter, Egg or Spring event period. 4 months into my first year on the job, I was told to have an egg hunt at Jordan Park. So I took a box of eggs, went to Jordan Park, dressed up like the Easter Bunny and had an egg hunt that lasted maybe 30 seconds. After that, we decided, maybe we can do something bigger. Why not create a carnival/festival type atmosphere that actually “celebrates” spring time. We wanted out door groups, gardeners, tour companies as well as children’s vendors to make this an event for all ages. Our goal really was to celebrate spring time. As it turns out, we didn’t get much participation from the outdoors groups, but the children themed groups were excited to participate. So our Celebration of Spring (a name I came up with when we invented this event) has turned into a mostly child friendly event. The egg hunt is a portion of this event, but by no means the main point. Families love the scavenger hunt, the rides and the vendors. The purpose of this event was never to celebrate Easter, so adding Easter to the title was never a consideration.

In conclusion to answer all of your questions
    1. I created the event and the name and it was never taken to a public meeting. Why would it? I don’t have any of our events or titles approved at public meetings.
    2. The word “Easter” was never on our banner at Posse Grounds Road, so again, never removed. I approved our banner.
    3. The Easter Bunny is at our event, not dead and buried. We even reference that name on our website, “The Easter bunny will be on hand for picture taking.” So the word “Easter” is used where it pertains.

I hope this helps to clarify. Perhaps you are remembering another egg hunt event that took place in the past but wasn’t operated by the City. If I am mistaken, then it was before my time here, because as I mentioned, I did not “take over” this event. I created it from scratch.

    Thank you

Therefore, any ill conceived accusations I erroneously directed to elected officials, staff, or anyone else pertaining to past Posse Grounds events having been related to the term “Easter”, I withdraw. My mission was to find out when former Easter Egg Hunts at the Posse Grounds had been changed to Celebration of Spring egg hunt and Ms. Murdoch has now clarified that it was she who had done so.

Just one inaccuracy in her explanation.

Easter Egg Hunts most assuredly had been a Posse Grounds annual event for years and years prior to and after Sedona incorporated. If there had been a lapse perhaps during a transitional staff reorganization or after the retirement of Marie Brown, first Sedona City Clerk and ultimately Director of Parks & Rec, I do not know. However, it would be remiss to ignore the participation and existence of the many volunteers, participants, elected officials, and perhaps city staff who worked hard during the original festivities at the Posse Grounds, even over and above the Easter Egg Hunts, which, contrary to Ms. Murdoch, did exist.

Other than that, I stand by my opinions as expressed in my Letter to the Editor. The grandiose posturing presently being integrated into the new but not necessarily better Sedona are a far cry from the promises made prior to what the future of Sedona would offer before the actual vote to incorporate.

The question of transparency is alive and well. Again, my opinion.

  2. Governing cannot be based on misrepresenting beliefs and or using Churches as bully whips of destroying same.

Falseness in one area of life proves falseness in all.

A final comment with your forbearance.

American elected officials are expected to truthfully and unequivocally express opinions and withstand opinions scrutiny or your officials will speak, hear and see nothing publicly.

Democracies require citizen involvement and control of its masters while other forms of government rely on a few masters to control the disenfranchised populace. This man is puzzled what nation your elected officials believe they represent?

  3. FODDER says:

Is it me or are just the Catholics not allowed to express holidays publicly?

Sorry if we are the most visible for holidays like Easter and Christmas but I don’t hear anyone complaining about other religious group holidays.

Should we rename “Mitzvah” Day to “do a good deed” Day? It, otherwise might offend someone or cause confusion thinking you would have to be a certain faith to participate, like Jewish perhaps.

Give me a break…..Agenda 21- slowly take everything that means anything and devalue it. It’s a take away

  4. Tom G says:

One again, a reasonable explanation by Rachel Murdoch does not satisfy the conspiracy theorists or Government haters!! I have left a space below for BS remarks by Richard Sanders and Sharlett. Fire away!

  5. Darlene W says:

Both the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus distribute Easter Eggs and Christmas Gifts to all humanity, regardless of race, creed, or color.

Neither of them are associated with religious services and therefore, unlike “high-handed holier than thou snoots,” actually practice what they silently “preach” through the traditional purposes of their very creation.

Therefore may the “higher power” watch over them during this stressful time of rejection by those concerned with “political correctness.”

You see, Santa Claus and Easter Bunny will manage to live on forever. Can the “PC” endorsers of Sedona make that same claim? Of course not. Even Washington DC is apparently smart enough to realize a fight against the inevitable is mission impossible.

  6. Tom Bergen says:

Once again, A BIG THANK YOU TO MS EDDIE.

While I realize that you started this topic, I applaud you for continuing your quest to reach the truth and than printing it here for everyone to see.

I must agree with Tom G, Richard Saunders and his partner in crime, Sharlett or what ever name she chooses to use for this topic will continue to give their slanted view. If someone at City Halls says that the sky is blue, those two will try to convince everyone that THEY KNOW BETTER and that the sky really is purple.

I hope that everyone on this site realizes that they’re just trying to “get their 15 seconds of fame” and are trying to look intelligent, for once.

  7. Facts are facts, I took my daughter from ages 5-8 to the Easter Egg Hunt at Posse Grounds. That would have been from 1993-1996, the event was free. I don’t recall who the sponsor was. I’ve got pictures of my daughter there with her Easter Basket.

Unlike the view of some of the city employees, Sedona did exist before they started collecting their six figure salaries. People volunteered, donated and enjoyed the small town atmosphere that the current city would so like to forget.

My hope is that we can eliminate Home rule and get some of our small town back.

    Tell your friends.

  10. @ Tom G

I agree, let’s disincorporate Sedona. That way no one gets to spend any other persons “hard earned Tax Dolllars!!!!” Citizens would volunteer their time and money if they choose.

No one would need anyone else”s “approval”, permission or pay a mandatory tax. People would freely donate their time to a children”s event, and the children could attend for free. Freedom, I like it.

There would be no gifts of other peoples “hard earned Tax Dolllars!!!!” to the Chamber of Commerce, Film Festival or one months vacation/leave during a city employees first year of employment.

We would still have Sedona Schools and Sedona Fire, who receive NO money from the city of Sedona.

No forcible taking of money, right Tom G?

  11. Terry says:

@Tom Z: Thank you for explaining the impressive letters following Rachel Murdoch’s name. The budget for Parks & Recreation in a tourist town situated in the middle of a national forest is mind boggling, but that’s been a long source of aggravation every time this city council and city staff bring up new ways to increase taxes.

Also, since Ms. Murdoch is so important and no one questions “her projects” it’s amazing she needed to get council approval for the splash pad. It must have been utter drudgery for her to need special approval for that project of only $269,000.

Of the three Toms (Bergen, Tom G. and yourself) your e-mail here is most informative. The other two Toms appear to live for the sole reason of taking Richard Saunders to task. Either that or occupy so much space in Sedona Eye that it’s becoming a turnoff for people to waste time finding comments from others. For the record, I do not know any of these people be they pseudonyms or the real deal.

Special appreciation to Councilman John Martinez. Had it not been for him challenging “politically correct” by being so bold as to use the term “Easter Egg Hunt” none of the facts relating to Rachel Murdoch’s employment would have been made public.

Last but not least, the rude implication that nothing was happening in Sedona before she was hired to work for the city is unfounded and a slap in the face to Marie Brown, Pud Colquitt, Anita MacFarlane and others who made previous Easter Egg Hunts and Sedona events successful. That, in my opinion, was probably the most appalling revelation in Rachel Murdoch’s explanation of her very important presence in Sedona, Arizona.

  12. Jack says:

Thank you Tom Z. I wondered if anyone one else pick that up.
Since when was ownership of a City event employee owned?
Since when did employees set the policy for the city?
    Ms. Murdoch statement is scary.

  13. Tom G says:

I’m sure the last three posts were written by Sharlett!! Oh Sharlett my how you enjoy spinning Non issues into a conspiracy theory. Also Richard Sander, I just saw two cops talking to each other in the Basha’s parking lot, quick man, grab your camera!! You can use it as yet another example of how city employees are wasting you Hard Earned Tax dollars!! Funny stuff

  14. Terry says:

Tom G. True to form. You never disappoint. My comment appeared @7:43 AM and yours popped up @10:41! And for the record, I AM NOT SHARLETT or RICHARD SANDER! (You must really be upset because you misspelled his name. Should have been Saunders I do believe.) Oops your anger and rage continue to escalate.

BTW what choice bit of useful information did you include in your most recent post? Notice I said “useful” since your ongoing rants are stale and boring and contribute nothing worthwhile.

Thank you for proving my point.

  15. Yes, no doubt about it, that Rachel Murdoch is a busy girl. At a city council meeting (March 26, 2013) during a discussion of properties City should consider for purchase with development impact fees, among the selection was the ADOT property at the southwest corner of State Rtes. 179 and 89A.

In one of my other articles, “Quotes, Quips, or Quirks” (4/3/13) included is the following:

“ADOT property at “Y”: 0.134 acres. Price unknown. To be considered for pedestrian park and link to uptown area. Rachel Murdoch’s suggested use was for a promotion of events, advertising, banners, and signs as she compared the location with the Chamber of Commerce in Cottonwood. ‘It would be huge,’ she said, referring to accommodating and pleasing the business community.”

Is this under consideration as another of Ms. Murdoch’s projects whereby she needs no approval from a higher authority to move it forward at her discretion? Since both the Chamber of Commerce and Sedona Main Street Program have been pursuing this property for Murdoch’s suggested use, is she representing those special interest groups? As a city paid employee, how far reaching is her authority?

Based on her own words as appear in the above column, it becomes increasingly alarming to presume the unleashed power and authority that has been given to her. If anything it upholds my stated concern relating to “transparency” in addition to the extent of “political correctness” within the confines of Sedona City Limits.

  16. Jack says:

Sorry Tom G.. I am not Sharlett or Richard. I do agree with Terry your anger and rage continues. We have a number of professionals in Sedona that can help you with that. You are not providing us with any good information.
Hope you can learn to deal with your anger issues. Have a great day!

  17. Tom G says:

Terry I appreciate the spelling lesson…. As far as useful information goes, just pointing out the mindset of insignificant people who crusade as reformers and find fault in everything!! Even appropriate responses to thier fault finding questions!!

They can’t hide thier hate, and hiprocracy about everything Government!!

Richard Saunders thinks two cops talking to each other is a waste of his taxes and posts such pictures on his city dissolution campaig website!! If you think things such as this are legigately and not just the ranting of a crazy man with a chip on his shoulder, than I feel sorryt for you!

As far as Sharlett goes she’s from the same mold and loves taking city employees/council to task and never satisfied with even the most reasonable answers!! Love to fault find and point fingers about everything

Do I have all the answers? no. But certainly I have a right to expose thier flaws and mindset as they do others!

BTW I not mad, as a matter of fact, I find people such as these quite humorous as they can’t see the reality past thier own hate of everything.

  18. Sharlett says:

    @Tom G.

Talk about a conspiracy theory – you “conspire” that I am Jack, Terry and Richard Saunders. Hate to disappoint you but I’m just Sharlett and don’t have enough time in the day to make all those posts.

With all due respect – Please stay on your meds and leave me alone.

Add on @Joanne “where in town business collect taxes for outside business to be promoted and hurt thier own”

  23. If you criticize the city or their polices you are accused of “hating government.”

I don’t hate government, they are needed for roads, police and a few other very limited functions. The county could do all of those, the city only duplicates the functions.

Then those in government, when they have nothing to do and money to spend, want to impose their views on you. After a while they cease to think they work for you, they think they are in charge. Sedona existed before there was a city of Sedona. I think we would do just fine after disincorporation. Before that , we can tighten the purse and eliminate the excessive spending allowed under “home rule”.

The only wan we can accomplish this is by talking to your friends and neighbors. Knowledge is power. Shared knowledge is even more powerful.

    Vote no home rule.

  24. From one of my fellow believers in freedom and limited government:

“Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.” – Thomas Paine

  25. drclg says:

Do I detect sarcasm in Ms. Murdoch’s rebuttal? Not surprised! I had the misfortune to watch her in action and truly wonder why Mr. Ernster keeps her employed. The comments sound much like the current administration, with lots of “I’s” and “me’s.” Is not our country one of “ours” and “us.” When any government official, whether it be city or country, begins to think “they” are the ones to make the decisions, we have lost our democracy and our freedom. Thank you all for your many insightful and intelligent comments. I was beginning to lose hope.

  26. Charlie says:

Also heard a lot of people complaining/crying on this site about free Holiday gift wrapping! FYI the gift paper was donated as were the gift wrappers donating there time!! They were suggestion ing in lieu of payment a monetary donation to various causes!! I got one girt wrapped and donated 20$ to the fallen Prescott Fire Fund!!

So go ahead, cry, complain and find fault in everything, but get your facts straight!

    HERBERT SPENCER

  29. Tom Bergen says:

    @ Charlie

Not to worry, when the “holiday trees” and other decorations go up, don’t forget to give Tony Marion Tonsich or Richard Saunders a call to take photos of the cops doing their job protecting the workers putting all of those festive decorations up around town.

It’s a shame that there are so many unhappy people around town that would rather have the city stripped of decorations and merriment to save a few bucks of our sales tax.

I’m happy to see Tony Marion and his alter ego: Richard Saunders, Julie Anna and her alter ego: Sharlett keeping busy on such important crusades like picking on pregnant women who are just doing their job. But after all, at least those city people are working and trying to make a difference in our city.

These issues that are so much more important then say, drug use, homelessness and the hungry. Those cast of characters have really nailed down real important problems.

  30. drclg says:

Well, that explains it! An Associates Degree and 4 years training. Give me a break. I have an AA, BA, MA and PhD and many, many years of experience and would never feel so emboldened and full of myself to act in such a manner as Ms. Murdock. I do think she needs many more years of training, especially in the area of people skills. Would be glad to help in that area.

  31. Charlie says:

    @drclg
May I compliment you on your two well thought out comments. It’s refreshing to know there are still people out there able to refine their thoughts to be conveyed in a calm manner, unlike the rants of two Toms who use this opportunity to spew constant venom to serve their own purposes. Their personal vendetta towards the specific people they constantly degrade has become boring to the point of almost being a detriment to this publication. But, of course, that might just be their ultimate goal.

It would be interesting to know how tax collecting retail stores feel about non-profits selling competitive items, tax free, at the give-away comfort station being offered by the city, Ms. Murdock, and her Chamber allies. Little wonder the difficulty for businesses to keep their doors open in Sedona.

The more I read, the more inclined I am to agree with Mr. Saunders and his alleged “etals.”

  32. Tom G says:

    DRCLG

I got news for you, you are already full of yourself!! With your comment “I have an AA, BA, MA, and PhD!! also putting DR in your handle just adds to your self fulfillment. A little people”s skill for you may do you some good as well!

  33. In some instances comments posted are distorting the focus of my “Letter to the Editor” almost beyond recognition of the original intent, which was a quest to determine when annual Sedona Easter Egg Hunts had been changed to Celebration of Spring egg hunts. The answer, as offered in full from Rachel Murdoch, was included with my submission.

Under no circumstances did I object to activities for children, or anyone else for that matter, and it’s unfortunate Ms. Murdoch was misinformed that Sedona events did not exist prior to her becoming an employee of the City of Sedona.

The publisher of Sedona Eye welcomes all comments which, to my knowledge, is unique in Sedona since I do not believe there is another publication, print or online, that isn’t inclined to refrain from discrimination.

Since all opinions are invited, my suggestion to those who prefer tactics which might serve to take my words, or those of others, out of context and distort the meaning in order to serve as diversions, why not write your own Letter to the Editor? At the top of Sedona Eye is the opportunity you might well be seeking which will offer you true equal opportunity to speak your mind and have your say in “open court” so to speak.

Of course, the only problem is you would rightfully be required to legitimately identify yourselves. However, if you are really true to your own convictions, that should serve you well unless your sole purpose is to negatively belie and assail those who do not agree with you. Again, that indicates you perhaps are ashamed to step out of the shadows and proudly take ownership of your positions which, after all, is the only method by which you will truly attain credibility in any sense of the word. Transparency and political correctness are also terms which appear in my own submission.

Again, the above is my opinion and I thank Sedona Eye for this opportunity.
    Eddie S. Maddock

PS: To those who have asked, no, there is no relationship between me and Rachel Murdoch. My last name is Maddock. The two of us have never met.

  34. jack says:

@charlie we hate it! Written city council and for some reason they don’t care. No reply. They are hurting us uptown merchants that collect the sales tax that pays thier salaries.
Wrong. Sorry this city council sucks! They treat the merchants like aliens. The only ones that matter are Ms Jennifer and Suckner. They’re not even city businesses collecting taxes. They want us all gone.

  35. Disappointed.

As you all know I am a real person – lived here 20ish years. We have always had an Easter egg hunt for our children. Many families even had their grandchildren visit for the festivities. Small town charm. Love and support. Residents and businesses that financially supported the city.

Thank you Ms. Maddock for being my mentor, speaking up with honesty and being fair. Maybe those of you using your charlatan names can follow Ms. Maddock lead.

As I see it, there is a big disconnect. The City of Sedona was incorporated to govern the incorporated area. Period. The incorporated area is a focused area. The city of Sedona is NOT the Village of Oak Creek, Red Rock Crossing, Boynton Canyon, or Oak Creek Canyon. Over the years the outlining areas have been asked to become part of the city, they declined.

Many have their hand out for municipalities’ monies. This is the root cause. We all love our region. The City of Sedona is the district of incorporation. FOCUS AREA. Only those in that area matter.

Performance for City Council and City employees are based on that. FOCUS on the duties of Sedona City. Whether you like it or not, it is an exclusive club. This is the reason Prescott, Cottonwood, and San Diego are building their own CORE exclusive club., Their own city residents & businesses.

Sedona City numbers speak for themselves. Businesses and residents have declined over the last years. Don’t use the recession as a excuse, look at your neighbors. They have increased their populations, sales tax revenue, and they are business friendly. Don’t take my word for it. Go look. There are public records.

City Council is elected to represent the voting residents in the city district. Not special interest groups or those that live outside the district. It is up to the City to work with their income generators to do just that. Create income for the city of Sedona to sustain the quality of life and beauty of the national forest we live in. The City Council is suppose to represent us residents and make policy for the employees of Sedona to follow.

Simple. Exclusive club. Sedona City Residents while maintaining our income generators, Sedona City District Businesses. Only when everyone speaks up using their real names can change happen. I am a registered voter and want positive change. Write City Council as they are the ones that are supposed to represent you and set the “City” policy.

The link for email is http://www.sedonaaz.gov/Sedonacms/index.aspx?page=1096 Here you can send it to the entire city council all at once. Please speak up.

  36. Jan says:

Well, it seems pretty clear to me the “high handed holier than thou snoots in Sedona” aren’t limited to the seven elected to the council. They are arrogantly seated behind desks at City Hall being paid high salaries. Then there’s the Chamber of Commerce who at this point in time are truly the ones calling the shots and getting money to promote mostly businesses that do not collect city taxes. THEY are the ones who changed the name of Christmas to Holiday. Same as Rachel, no one tells them how to run THEIR events even though the city pays for them. Unreal!
