Sedona Pines and Cottonwood Boy Scouts Share Award

Team Effort Wins Top Spot For 2010

Cottonwood LDS Boy Scout Troop 7021

The Sedona Pines Resort, Sedona Pines LLC and Cottonwood LDS Boy Scout Troop 7021 teamed up in 2009. They kept this team together in 2010 to claim the 2010 Folksville USA Adopt-A-Highway Permittee-Of-The-Year Award. They are an excellent example of those helping to restore the beauty to America the Beautiful and Arizona.

Greg Penrod, CFO of the Sedona Pines, made the Scouts a deal they couldn’t refuse. The Boy Scouts were paid a donation of $5 for each bag of litter they collected on a 2-mile section of Scenic Highway 89A between Cottonwood and Sedona. In 2010 the Scouts collected 90 bags of litter and many miscellaneous items during their four litter recovery events. They have been responsible for collecting the litter between MP-364 and MP-366 on Scenic Highway 89A.

Greg is a working CFO. Bill Olson, owner of A&B Motors, and David Priest are the Scout Masters of Troop 7021. The Boy Scouts separated the trash from the recyclables and properly disposed of all items. The recyclable items for all four litter events consisted of 1301 items. These items consisted of beer bottles, quart beer bottles, mini-shot bottles, plastic water bottles and soda cans. The Scouts are collecting all aluminum items to fetch 65 cents per pound at Road Runner Recycle in Cottonwood. For their efforts in 2010, they earned $450 for the bags of litter they collected, $255 in donations from pledges from private individuals plus the 65 cents per pound they will collect from their aluminum cans. The Scouts have learned how to earn the funds they need for their events and they have benefited from their entry level business class titled “Lemon Aid Stand 101.”

Greg Penrod of the Sedona Pines and Sedona Pines LLC are also responsible for the cleanliness and the mowing of the frontage road which parallels Scenic Highway 89A between MP-367 to MP-368.

Folksville USA recognizes the efforts of all 15 Adopt-A-Highway Permittee’s between Cottonwood MP-355 and Sedona MP-370. These groups are Rio Verde Roverette’s Inc, Yavapai College Fire Fighters Academy, Immaculate Conception Parish, Knights of Columbus Council #2493, Cottonwood Ranch Community, Latin American Center, Halau Hula Na-Pua-O-Ka-Lei-‘llama, Sedona Car Club, Sedona Pines LLC/CW Boy Scouts Sedona Pines Resort/CW Boy Scouts, Central AZ Masonic #14 Sedona, Kimberly Wachter DDS, Rotary Club of Sedona and a unclaimed one mile section cleaned by some of the Original Road Warriors. The fifteen ADOT, Adopt-A-Highway Permittee’s between Cottonwood and Sedona recovered 581 bags of litter in 2009 and 449 bags in 2010. Through their efforts, it appears that they are gaining some success with their efforts to restore the beauty to America the Beautiful and Arizona. All but one of the Permittee’s noted have agreed to conduct three or more litter recovery events in 2011.

February 19/20, May 21/22, August 20/21 and November 19/20 are the next litter recovery dates scheduled for 2011. If you wish to participate in our efforts to restore the beauty to America the Beautiful and Arizona please e-mail FolksvilleUSA@gmail.com for details.
