Sedona AZ (July 8, 2017) – The following is a letter to the SedonaEye.com editor:
Cell towers emit radiofrequency radiation. New results from long term studies have proven cell towers increase risks for cancers.
According to “P & Z delays wireless vote” (Red Rock News, June 7, 2017), there was nearly an hour of discussion during the Commission’s Public Hearing on June 1. Additional comments and concerns from the public regarding the City’s Wireless Communications Plan update will not be allowed during the subsequent meeting (date TBD).
Apparently in danger of slipping beneath the radar is the fact that Consultant CityScape and the City Manager’s Office are recommending urban density cell tower coverage for Sedona vs rural density. The requirement of twice as many wireless infrastructure sites for urban density has greater negative impacts on public health, safety and welfare and fails to preserve the unique natural beauty of our very small City.
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine encourages avoidance of radio frequency such as from cell towers, etc., due to debilitating health effects associated with RF exposure.
A 2013 study conducted in Belo Horizonte, Brazil’s third largest city, found that over 80 percent of people who succumbed to certain types of cancer resided a third of a mile away from cell towers (“New study: direct link to 4,924 cancer deaths from cellular antennas radiation”). And studies in Austria, Germany, and Israel likewise found living within a certain proximity of a cell tower increased the risk of cancer.
Consultant CityScape came up with 20 City-owned tower site locations: Eight (8) cell towers with their large, noisy base stations are planned on City Property and Ten (10) on private owned property.
Twenty-two (22) towers already exist in or near the perimeter of the City. Woefully, many new towers and base stations will be located in residential areas.

During the P & Z meeting nearly 20 members of the public expressed serious concerns about wireless tower antennae. A resident living within 300-feet of a proposed tower site stated she received a letter from Karen Osborn referring to her home’s proximity. Although the Federal Communications Act of 1996 preempts health concerns relating to RF radiation, if my understanding is correct, not excluded are safety, aesthetics and property value issues.
CityScape states Wireless Master Planning will create a new method for new community revenues. The average yearly cell phone tower lease rate payment in the U.S. in 2016 was $45,000+ according to Vertical Consultants. However, they indicate lease rates vary greatly and can be well over $45,000 per year.

The no-it-all folks “loving this site” do not necessarily represent the intelligent. They most likely are of the same ilk as those that will still NEVER admit smoking causes cancer.
Having witnessed one of my three sisters dying, still puffing on cigarettes because even at that late date she remained in denial and refused it was because of smoking she had cancer in a leg muscle and came close to having her leg amputated because of the resulting lack of circulation.
So until and unless these people who criticize those of us who are concerned actually are afflicted, they will remain laughing and pointing fingers.
This is extremely serious. Even damages being inflicted on young and old that live with their little wireless gadgets not unlike babies sucking on pacifiers have no clue as to what might or might not be damaging as time passes and future results remain undetermined.
However, this is the here and now. Point fingers, call names, but you, too, are at risk – like it or not.

Since not all towers must be registered with the FCC, the total for Sedona may be greater than 44.

We were once consultants to cities and counties on wireless. Now retired, we laugh at all the so-called information that is out there. You can multiply any inventory you see on the FCC site. The reason is that not all personal wireless service facilities need to be registered with the FCC. A “tower” is a trojan horse for many carriers. Some are not even paying rent, and some are not permitted by the city. Carriers also put up pirate sites. Only they know they are. In order for safety and aesthetics to be used for city review, you will need an ordinance. If you call them “towers”. you will get towers. If you call them PWSFs, you can get smaller facilities. The notion of urban towers vs. less dense deployments is only partially the reason more PWSFs are needed. New frequency bands are being added all the time and they need other locations closer to the user. If someone sends me an email address, I’ll see if I can send some old newsletters of ours.

Please Note: A PUBLIC NOTICE in yesterday’s RRN states P & Z will continue the Public Hearing started on June 1, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2017. This is good news. The RRN had previously reported on June 7 that “There will be no additional public comments” on the wireless communications matter in accordance with the instructions of the City Attorney.
It would be beneficial to know @Kreines had a city staff member contact him. Obviously Sedona has issues.
@Warren – Those antnennasearch.com results came from me and they show the number of antennae and towers from the Airport Mesa exposing me to radiation!! Those of us being severely affected, those who have not died yet, need to sell our houses and find some place else where we can live BEFORE 5G is installed here –also take our animals out of here.

In the case of RF/microwave radiation, notices should be sent out to all those residents covered in the RF propagation maps which I would seriously question because they were done by Cityscape.
Cityscape also did not let the city know about the legislation that was pending now signed in AZ allowing these towers to bombard the city/landscape/residential areas AND pay almost nothing for it, not to mention our health. That was passed in 8 or 9 other states simultaneously thanks to great wireless lobbyists and John McCain, a huge supporter.
It has nothing to do with our needs It is the carriers wants and you can listen to the videos and hear Cityscape say the carriers “want”. They must prove a need, no wants allowed. No spec building allowed.
The city also needs to stop creating vague sentences about the 1996 telecom act and quote it. It reads very different from the “we can’t do anything” approach the city is trying to take. The city has responsibilities.

Back to Cityscape, Why were there no protective ordinances in the city suggested? Are the towers measured by a third party periodically to ensure not surpassing legal limits? 70 % go unchecked and that tower farm on the Airport where all the tourist stand to watch the sunset? That keeps getting more dense. Is it measured?
How has Cityscape earned their money? Who benefits from their advice?
Cityscape needs to be fired and give the city a refund for inadequate service, in my opinion.
The city needs to wake up.
Sedona is not an isolated issue. This is happening globally.
5G is high frequency. They are also superimposing high bandwidth on top of low bandwidth. All unproven and untested next to you or your neighbors small children.
There needs to be a global wake up call and Sedona, which is so loved by the world is just the place to start that call. It can be done.

And why should we be surprised – they lie about everything else so why should this be an exception?
In addition to “not locating” over one-half of the existing wireless sites in Sedona, Consultant CityScape, and the City Manager’s Office as well, are recommending Urban Density coverage for Sedona. Urban Density coverage requires twice as many wireless towers as Rural Density.
The public has no idea how much CityScape is making for the lousy job it is doing. VOC Neighbor is spot on when he or she states “CityScape needs to be fired and give the City a refund for inadequate service, in my opinion.”
The current Sedona Wireless Communications Facilities Ordinance mandates NO wireless infrastructure on single-family residential property that has a residential use. Thanks to CityScape and the City Manager’s Office’s this is up for termination.

The minority controlling city hall will prevail – same as they have with allowing the chamber of commerce/lodging council to take over. This is one situation where residents of surrounding areas (greater Sedona – VOC, Oak Creek Canyon) should indeed stand up and shout, demand, and raise hell. They are putting more than just city limit residents in jeopardy!

Scott & I are tired of watching poor decisions for us and our children about wifi, emfs, radiation. You abuse your privileges to govern when you can’t take into account new science and new regulatory needs when the old are outdated. Instead of being behind the curve of regulation, be ahead of the curve and craft new regulations that protect us! I’m tired of it. I get disgusted every time I see that ugly piece of (deleted by editor) in my home’s siteline (granted its our second home but we pay for it) and when I stand on hills what do you see but that ugly monster smack dab in the middle. Do you hate your fire departments? Every building has cell phone towers on it enough to fry each firefighters brain! The people running the show here are atrocious sell outs to corporate America. Get rid of the Republicans on the council and vote in Democrats. If a Democrat votes for development and cell towers you know they are bad seeds personally because Democrats are pro environment and health.

Unfortunately here the commonality seems to be in getting $$$$ – no matter how or who they hurt. And at the same time they continue to throw millions into the bank account of the Chamber of Commerce without any creditable audit or tracking of how it is being spent. Live with it.

The Planning and Zoning Ordinance regarding wireless communication facilities for unincorporated areas of Yavapai County states:
“m. Prior to applying for a new facility, the applicant shall meet with community groups and interested individuals who reside or own property within one thousand feet (1,000′) of the proposed site to explain the proposed project. The purpose of these meetings is to inform and educate the community on wireless communications, and the restrictions placed on Yavapai County by the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996, as well as to solicit suggestions from these groups about the applicant’s proposal and impact mitigation measures.”
So what do residents of Sedona get? A letter from Karen Osborn stating your house is within 300 feet of a cell tower (if applicable).

Last Wednesday’s RRN reported “There will be no additional public comment” during the P & Z Meeting on August 1. But wait, at least 10 additional City-owned wireless tower sites have been added to the 8 previously proposed.
In this “P & Z CONTINUES TOWER MEETING” article, CityScape’s Susan Rabold states to date, 7-26-2017, they have found that an additional 17 to 25 towers of varying sizes will be needed in Sedona over the next 10 years. She claims “There are 22 towers in or near the perimeter of the City’s boundaries.” This is inaccurate and, IMO, deceptive. The FCC’s cell phone database lists 44 cell phone and antenna towers registered in Sedona, AZ. Note: not all towers must be registered.

According to the 8-01-2017 Staff Report from the City, the WHO and the American Cancer Society found “RF exposure is so low that human health and animal health is not affected.” WHAT?!! These were cell phone studies, not studies of CELL TOWERS.

The draft Sedona Wireless Master Plan states City-owned properties that can be part of a network deployment solution “for the wireless industry” are being identified. So much for solutions that are best for Sedona, its residents, businesses, their property values and the area’s unique beauty?
