Sedona Humane Society Has Canine Crisis

Sedona AZ (June 2, 2013) It’s a dog’s day in Sedona! Harley McGuire, SedonaEye.com Four Paws Up star columnist, is asking for your help. His pals at the Humane Society of Sedona (HSS) sent a letter explaining that homes and caregivers are critically needed for its canine residents.

Will you help the shelter by fostering a dog or, best yet, find in your heart and home enough room to adopt and love a new canine family member?

“The shelter is packed to the brim with dogs needing new homes. HSS had to buy temporary kennels to house the number of my dog pals coming in as strays or as owner surrenders,” explained Harley McGuire, shaking his head in concern after an afternoon romp in the park with friends. “It’s tough out there without somebody to love and take care for ya. Without my beloved mommy, I never would’ve reached my full potential as a writer or gotten to have such a great life right here in Sedona!”

Harley McGuire’s pal, Skipper, sprawling on the grass nearby piped in, “Please have a heart and do your part. If you can’t open your home to a dog, send a donation!”

Harley McGuire added, “The money will help ’til a home becomes available. My mom flew me all the way from faraway Texas and nobody but nobody loves me more than her! I know what it’s like to be a lucky dog!”

Back at the Humane Society of Sedona shelter, Executive Director Suzanne Fuqua explained, “There is an urgent need right now to place dogs into new homes or foster homes so we can continue to serve the community with the number of dogs coming into the shelter. It is our mission and our intent to place all adoptable dogs and so we are reaching out and asking people if you have been thinking of adopting please consider adopting a dog now.”

As an incentive, HSS will waive the adoption fees as long as each adopter purchases a license ($5-$7.50) and a microchip ($25) for each dog they adopt; the current adoption fee for a female dog is $85 and male is $75. Waiving the adoption fee is a significant savings, in addition to all the services provided – every dog is spayed or neutered and current on vaccinations – a savings of approximately $200.

Fuqua added, “It is far more important to HSS to get these dogs placed into new, loving homes immediately. Of course, as a nonprofit, funds are very important to us however if we weigh the cost of keeping a dog in the shelter for a longer period of time against reducing the adoption fee to place the dog sooner, it is an easy decision to make. We hope the community agrees and by the end of June, or sooner, we have nothing but empty dog kennels. Of course donations are welcome because, in addition to the urgent need to place dogs right now, we are always in constant need of funding. Donations are down from (the) prior year and for HSS to maintain its high quality of care and service to all the animals brought in, donations are extremely important.”

If you can help in any way by fostering or adopting a dog or donating funds, contact HSS at 928-282-4679. HSS is open from 10:00 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon every day with adoption counselors available to help people select the best canine buddy for them.

“You might adopt a star newspaper columnist if you adopt one of my canine pals,” Harley McGuire said, smiling up at his mom as she dug in her pocket for his favorite treat. “The Sedona shelter is a heck of a lot closer for you than Texas was for my mom, so get on down to Shelby Drive and ask my pals to go home with you today! Mom says if you send a picture of your new dog, I’ll get to share it with my readers! Heck, maybe I’ll even put a paw print on it for ya!”

Harley McGuire nudged his pal Skipper goodbye. “See you at the park again soon, Skippy ole boy! Maybe one of my readers will come to the park with a new dog pal for us to meet.”

The Humane Society of Sedona is located at 2115 Shelby Drive, Sedona, Arizona 86336. Contact HSS by calling 928-282-4679 or emailing info@humanesocietyofsedona.com and or visiting its website at www.humanesocietyofsedona.com.

  1. Skipper says:

I was lost, cold and hungry that day I was rescued back in February over 2 years ago. If my new Mom hadn’t rescued me, no telling where I would be right now. Dogs just need to be loved and then we can give someone all the TLC they need in return. Mom said if we had a bigger place, she’d adopt another dog. I am sending this to all Mom’s pals to see if anyone out there just wants to be loved back.

    Hi Harley McGuire:
Well, this is very sad and when the mayor man was quizzing Suzanne (that new lady at the Humane Society) he wanted to know just whether or not they only took in animals in City Limits.

Well, he don’t care about chamber of commerce members outside that area, who don’t even collect or pay city taxes and get all that free advertising at tax payers expense. Seems to me that man needs to visit the Humane Society but he probably don’t have a heart or any feelings for those of us with four legs.

He only used a fake picture with doggies when he wanted to be elected mayor. Guess he wouldn’t be a very good foster parent anyways.

From Barney, another lucky doggie who now has a loving home.
