Sedona Hiker Suffers Fatal Fall

Sedona Fire EMS ArizonaSedona AZ (December 1, 2014)The Sedona Fire Department responded to an injured hiker call around 4:00 p.m. on November 27, 2014. The victim, a sixty-one year old woman from Tucson, Arizona, was hiking in an area known locally as the “stairs” next to Devil’s Bridge, terrain composed of natural red rock stacked in such a way as to form a very steep staircase. SFD personnel arrived about thirty minutes after the call and found the victim with her husband and two others attempting to revive her. The victim had suffered head trauma from a fall estimated at eight feet.

The victim’s husband explained to Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies that he, with his wife and son, were out on a Thanksgiving Day hike and, upon reaching Devil’s Bridge, his wife decided not to venture out on the formation. She said that she was turning back, and left towards the stairs. According to the victim’s husband, he and his son began to hike back within a minute of her departure when, as both were hiking down the stairs, they discovered she had fallen. Two hikers, identifying themselves as doctors, were next to her performing CPR. The doctors alternated resuscitation efforts until the arrival of fire department personnel who pronounced her as deceased.

Sedona fire crews transported the victim down the mountain by hiking to the trail head, and then released the body to the custody of the Yavapai County Medical Examiner.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260 or the YCSO website at www.ycsoaz.gov.
