Sedona Fire District Excludes Public Forum

Dear Editor,

The Agenda for a Special Meeting of the Sedona Fire District Governing Board scheduled for September 29, 2011, at 9:00 a.m., specifically excludes the usual and customary (though not mandated by Statute) item of Public Forum.

As this meeting is a direct result of the Selection Committee’s erroneous assumption of authority, it stands to reason members of the Committee and certain members of the Board might not want to hear any version of “I told you so!” from the public.

Nevertheless, the public in general and one woman in particular were addressed during the last regular meeting of the Board in a venue where response might have resulted in the request for removal by a less than even-handed Chairman. Their only opportunity to respond to questions shouted by a Board member is during Public Form. At three minutes a person, I doubt the time would impede the Board’s progress all that much.

This is the equivalent of the Board chairman putting his fingers in his ears and chanting, “ La La La La La La La La…” to avoid hearing opinions and in some cases, very helpful information offered by members of the public.

It is juvenile and laughable. It does not silence voices. Those voices are being heard elsewhere.

What a shame the Chairman of this Board cannot recognize his own folly.
