Sedona celebrates National Bike Month May 2012

Sedona AZ (April 9, 2012) – In May 2011, the City of Sedona Arizona was designated a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. Living up to this designation, the City is continuing its effort to encourage residents to use bicycles for recreation, transportation, and better health. In addition, a number of infrastructure enhancements are currently being implemented in the City and several events will take place during the May 2012 National Bike Month.

Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Share The Road signs will be installed this spring along major secondary roads in west Sedona and uptown Sedona. These signs are intended to remind cyclists and motorists that travel lanes are shared by both modes of transportation. Bike Route signs will be installed on secondary roads north of Arizona State Route 89A in west Sedona. Riders following this route will avoid using SR 89A when traveling between Soldier Pass Road and Dry Creek Road.

Fifteen bike racks will be installed on city-owned property in west and uptown Sedona. These locations will include city parks, City Hall, and tourist areas.

A bike rodeo conducted by Sedona Fire Department is scheduled for May 4, 2012 at the West Sedona School. Students will participate in various bike riding skill events with classmates. Free bike helmets will be given out (while supplies last) and bike mechanics will be on hand to perform bike tune-ups.

Join the community for the second annual Mayor-Led Bicycle Ride sponsored by the City of Sedona on May 12, 2012 at 9 AM. Mayor Rob Adams will take riders on a two-part family fun ride that will include quiet west Sedona neighborhoods. At City Hall, bike mechanics will be available to perform minor bicycle tune-ups and remember riders of all ages that helmets are required.

The public of all ages is welcome to join in this City of Sedona community effort to promote cycling. Free tee shirts will be available for the first one hundred cyclists! Follow the SedonaEye.com Calendar of Events daily for all city-wide National Bike Month activities.

Eight businesses and individuals have provided $100 each ($800 total) for groups, clubs, or organizations that will help/assist the Folksville USA “LEAPING FROGS” and ADOT AAH Permittees associated with the May 19 effort to pick up 20 bags of trash from State Highway 260. The 20 bags to be collected will be separated from those collected by the ADOT AAH Permittees! What a great opportunity for civic minded residents to organize for a good cause!

Our goal is to make our highways appealing to residents, tourists, new home buyers, new businesses that bring job opportunities! Our next Leap Frog 3 event is May 19th so contact Gary Chamberlain at folksvilleusa@gmail.com or call 928-202-1186.
