Sedona Environmentalist Promotes Zero Waste

Marlene Rayner, former DuPont research scientist

Sedona AZ (July 20, 2011)–Marlene Rayner, Sierra Club Sedona-Verde Valley Group chair and founding member of the Sierra Club National Zero Waste (ZW) Team in 2003 will be a participant in a series of Zero Waste and Sustainability conferences in San Diego, California beginning July 30 this year.

As a former DuPont research scientist for 20 years, Marlene Rayner has been a tireless advocate of Zero Waste to reduce landfills and prevent any other version of waste incineration technologies (including waste-to-energy proposals) from use. Education of the public and the government are necessary to successfully prevent wasteful and polluting practices from continuing unabated. Rayner successfully prevented a new incinerator installation in Delaware as well as in adjoining states before her relocation to Sedona Arizona seven years ago.

Rayner believes that the “application of Zero Waste principles form the basis for sustainability and to understand this approach, one must comprehend that our planet is a “living system” where many different parts work together and, like any other living organism, is subject to change.”

The ZW meetings begin with the GrassRoots Recycling Network (GRRN) National ZW Action Conference (theme is Learn Globally Act Locally), followed by the Sierra Club National ZW Team meeting, and ending with the California Resource Recovery Association’s (CRRA) Annual meeting.

The meetings are sponsored by the CRRA, Zero Waste International Alliance, Sierra Club National Zero Waste Team, CRRA Global Recycling Council, Zero Waste San Diego, and the Urban Corps of San Diego.

Internationally respected Zero Waste experts and consultants Richard Anthony, Gary Liss USA; Joan Marc Simon, ZW Europe; Umo Lim, City of Manila, ZW Philippines; Rossano Ercolini, ZW Italy; Gustavo Abdalla, ZW Brazil Institute; Pal Martensson, ZW Sweden will give presentations.
