Sedona AZ (September 16, 2013)On September 11, 2013, the Sedona City Council approved staff’s recommendation for a two-stage competitive design process for a new outdoor performance venue at the Barbara Antonsen Memorial Park at Posse Grounds Park, Sedona. The new venue will replace the pavilion dome that collapsed during construction in August 2012.

In March 2013, the Sedona City Council voted to not reconstruct the collapsed dome. On June 12, 2013, the City Council conducted a public meeting to review different options for the outdoor performance venue and provided direction that led to the city staff recommendation for the competitive design process.

The two-stage design competition will take place between October 2013 and April 2014. To comply with state law, the City will advertise a Notice of Competitive Design Solicitation for 30 days beginning in early October 2013 with a submission deadline for Stage 1 in early November 2013:  The Stage 1 process requests Statements of Qualification (SOQ), Portfolios of Accomplishment and Project Understand and Approach Statements to demonstrate a Team’s vision and design approach, as well as the capability and experience of the Team.

The three most qualified teams will be selected to advance to Stage 2 of the design concept competition; Stage 2 requires the three design teams to develop design concepts. A key design expectation is that the overall design be in harmony with the existing natural and built environment and contribute rather than detract from the remainder of the Posse Grounds Park, the surrounding neighborhoods and the overall physical environment of the City.

A seven member Design Competition Jury would be established to review and judge the submitted designs at both stages. The Design Competition Jury will be comprised of one City Council member, the City Manager, Public Works Director, Community Development Director, Parks and Recreation Manager, one representative of the Friends of Posse Grounds Park and one neighborhood representative selected by the surrounding neighbors.

Per City Council direction, Stage 2 of the design competition process will include an opportunity for the public to review and vote on the three design concepts. Public review and voting is anticipated to occur in person at public displays in the Community Development/Public Works lobby and the Sedona Public Library and on-line through a dedicated web page on the City’s web site.

The overall project budget for the new outdoor performance venue is $900,000. Sedona City Council has approved a not to exceed design budget of $117,000 that would include refinement of the design concept, meetings with the City Council, community and City staff, production of plans and documents for required land use and design approvals, participation in required land use and design approval processes and construction assistance services. To comply with state law, the two firms not selected in the Stage 2 process will receive a Council approved stipend amount of $7,500 each for labor and expenses The City Council approved a construction budget of $768,000.

City staff is currently preparing all required documents and creating a project specific web page. The documents and web page are expected to be available on October 1.

  1. Pickleball can now be played at Sedona’s Sunset Park, located at 655 Sunset Drive. A fresh set of stripes and a brand new net on the basketball court delineate the pickleball court.

Pickleball is a racquet sport, which combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. The game is played with a hard paddle and a polymer smaller version of a whiffle ball. Although pickleball appears to be very similar to tennis, there are key differences that make it more accessible to a wider range of players, particularly children and seniors.

Chief among these differences is the speed of the pickleball, which typically moves at one-third of the average speed of a tennis ball. Equally important, however, is the size of the court, which is just under one-third of the total area of a tennis court. This smaller area combined with the slower moving ball makes pickleball much easier to play than tennis.

The pickleball court is available on a first-come first-served basis. It is hoped that with this new upgrade, additional players will be accommodated.
