Sedona AZ (May 3, 2010)The residents of the City of Sedona are invited to an overview presentation on the update to the Community Plan at three upcoming meetings.  Residents will also have an opportunity to discuss the issues that are most important to them and to Sedona.

These Community Plan meetings are:

Monday, May 10 at 6 p.m.      Sedona Red Rock High School, 995 Upper Red Rock Road

Tuesday, May 11 at 1 p.m.      Keep Sedona Beautiful, 360 Brewer Road

Thursday, May 13 at 6 p.m.   St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 100 Arroyo Pinon Drive

Cities and towns in Arizona are required by state law to have a “general plan” and to update it at least every ten years.  The Sedona Community Plan is the City’s required general plan and is a statement of community goals and development policies including maps and text that set forth objectives, principles, standards and proposals.  The Community Plan is our “road map” for achieving community objectives.  Sedona’s Plan guides city officials in decisions on development such as re-zonings, preparing new regulations and ordinances, initiating specific planning programs, priorities and funding.

Since Arizona law mandates that the Community Plan be updated and voted on at least every ten years, the next Community Plan update must be adopted by the City Council by the end of 2012 and voted on by Sedona’s citizens by 2013.  On March 23, 2010, the Sedona City Council initiated the Community Plan Update process.  It is anticipated that the process will take at least two years and would consist of four phases.  The first two phases involve background and issue identification; the third phase involves the preparation of a draft plan, followed by a fourth phase of public hearings with the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.

The updated Plan must be approved by at least two thirds of the members of the City Council prior to the Plan being placed on the ballot for ratification by the voters.

Public participation is key to the update process.  There will be many opportunities over the next two years for people to provide input.  Residents, community groups, city commissions, and the City Council will work together to identify key issues and concerns, and to formulate policies and recommendations to address the issues.

There are many ways for the public to provide input and get involved now.  The public is invited to the first series of community meetings in May.  Other meetings will also be scheduled this fall.  The Planning and Zoning Commission also conducts meetings on the Plan update on the third Tuesday of the month at City Hall.  Working Team meetings are also conducted throughout each month on the subjects of sustainability, character of the west Sedona commercial corridor, plan format and public participation.  A listing of these meetings and information about the Community Plan update and the Community Plan document is on the city website at www.sedonaaz.gov/planUpdate.
