Big Park

2013 Sedona Big Park School Bike Rodeo winners with Don Nelms, Sedona Farmers Insurance agent who donated four bikes to lucky winners, and the crew of helpers from Sedona Fire District and area bike shops

SEDONA AZ (May 7, 2013) – Over 200 students from Big Park School in the Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, Arizona, participated in the annual school Bike Rodeo given by the Sedona Fire District on Friday, May 3, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. until Noon. The school rodeo event is a bicycle-riding course designed with general hazards faced by most bicycle riders that stresses bike and rider safety.

Students bring their bicycles and helmets to the Rodeo for an inspection prior to starting an obstacle course that tests mounting and dismounting; straight-line control, weaving and maneuvering, short radius turning, braking, slow speed control, circling and changing direction skills. Each student earned a Bike License, complete with a photo and fingerprint, for participating in the Rodeo.

Don Nelms, a Farmers Insurance agent located in west Sedona, donated four bicycles for the 2013 Rodeo event. The bicycle winners are Second-grader Kaitlyn Otterlee, Third-grader Gabreil Estrada, Fourth-grader Jose Landaverde, and Sixth-grader Rebecca Kay.

Bicycle mechanics from local bike shops assisted with inspections and check-ups. Tours of the Guardian Air ambulance helicopter were available as well as a demonstration of the Department of Public Safety rollover simulator:  The rollover simulator is designed to clearly demonstrate the importance of always wearing your seatbelt while riding in a motor vehicle.

Congratulations to the winners and a thank you to all the many helping hands that provided this invaluable resource for Sedona schoolchildren to practice bicycle safety!
