Right to Vote Viewpoint from Prescott Valley

Dear SedonaEye.com editors,

Voter Suppression Is Mounting! Conservatives say they’re for national freedoms and rights. What about our right to vote? How about a return to the Jim Crow voting laws that prevailed after the Civil War? Think it couldn’t happen?

Think again.

Voter Suppression is the new banner of the Republican Party. If you can’t find candidates to the peoples liking, then let’s keep the people from voting.

Here is what’s happening.

In at least 20 states all with Republican governors and legislatures voter suppression laws have been instigated. The laws have cut the time people would have for early voting, are demanding government issued IDs and drivers licenses at the polls, and increasing residency requirements this at a time when so many people have lost their homes.

What we’re talking about is a possible 11 percent of Americans, or 21 million people, being turned down for voting. And if that weren’t enough, there’s a new process called Voter Caging which, according to Wikipedia, is a method of challenging the registration status of voters to prevent them from voting in an election.

The Republican Party plan is designed to keep Democrats from voting by targeting people based on their race and ethnicity with key battleground states like Ohio and Florida. A Wisconsin group has uncovered such a voter suppression effort coordinated by tea party groups, the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity, and the state Republican Party, in an effort to knock thousands of likely Democratic voters out of the election.

The plan is moving forward in other states as well. Will it come to Arizona? And just who would be hurt the most by these new laws? Minorities, of course, and students those who tend to vote Democrat. And it hurts the elderly and handicapped as well. All the people who most need a hand up by the government.

Republicans say this is all in an effort to diminish voter fraud. But so far, fraud has been largely disproved in all states. The real reason, of course, is to keep Democrats out of office. Back when Tom Delay, the Texan, was still in Congress before he was convicted of government fraud he openly admitted that he and others of his party were working to create a permanently Republican America. And it looks like they’ve renewed their efforts.

Freedoms? What about your freedom to choose your own government? Will the elections be fair now? Not if the Republican Party and the wealthy corporate bosses have their way. This is an assault on Democracy! An assault on the American way of life!

    Susan,
You are drinking the kool-ade. We doubt an assault on Democracy and the American way of life is being mounted by the Republican Party because it seems that the Democrats are mounting it riding the ass of hyperbole.
    Climb down, dear.

Excellent article. As for the Veasey patronizing comment, I believe they have their party of hyperbole confused since the TP’s invaded the party, there has been little else EXCEPT hyperbole WITHOUT giving any concrete references to such pronouncements. Sorry, but the Repubs lost credibility with me since the Palin invasion occurred.

Also, after 40 years of unobstructed voting in primaries, once I moved to AZ (in 1997) and obtained my new license and voter’s registration for the Democratic party, was not allowed from voting in the 2000 election because somewhere there was a clerical error that did not show me registered. No forms were onsite that I could complete to protest this action and election clerks made no effort to correct my situation. I should have taken that as a sign of things to come.
