Prescott House Fire Claims Life

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Area Commands MapSedona AZ (April 24, 2015) – Just before midnight last night, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a house fire in the 4700 block of North Granite Gardens Drive, Prescott, Arizona, with notice that a person was possibly trapped inside the home. Deputies arrived within minutes and were met by an off-duty deputy who lives in the area and was already on the scene.

Resident of the home John Stenson, 66, told deputies his wife, Linda Stenson, 67, was still in a bedroom inside the house. Stenson informed deputies that he had fallen asleep in the living room earlier and awoke to the sound of a smoke detector alert and a house filled with smoke. When he went to check on his wife in the bedroom, he was driven back from the doorway due to extreme heat, smoke and flames. He ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911 because he could not get to his phone inside the bedroom.

Prior to the arrival of the fire department, deputies also attempted to enter the bedroom from different sides of the house, but it remained fully engulfed in flames.

Prescott Fire Department personnel arrived and were eventually able to extinguish the fire. Deputies entered the bedroom and located a body, presumably Linda Stenson, inside. Identity confirmation is pending an autopsy by the Yavapai County Medical Examiner’s Office.

YCSO detectives arrived on scene to work with an Investigator from the Central Yavapai Fire District (CYFD) with the goal of determining cause. Mr. Stenson has remained fully cooperative throughout the investigation which continued into the afternoon today.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260 or the YCSO website.
